Patna: Bihar is witnessing a sharp rise in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with registrations increasing nearly 10 times over the past five years, according to Transport Department data. The trend reflects growing awareness of environmental protection and rising fuel costs pushing citizens toward cleaner mobility options.
EV Registrations Jump from 12,400 to Over 1.23 Lakh
In 2020, the number of registered electric vehicles in Bihar stood at around 12,400 units. By 2025, this figure has surged to more than 1.23 lakh EVs, marking a significant transformation in the state’s transport landscape.
Officials noted that EVs now account for nearly 6% of the total 81.68 lakh registered vehicles in Bihar, highlighting a steady shift toward sustainable transportation.

Year-Wise Growth Shows Consistent Rise
The data shows continuous year-on-year growth in EV adoption:
- 2020: Around 12,400 EVs registered
- 2021: Increased by 85.5%, crossing 23,000 units
- 2022: Jumped to over 55,700 vehicles
- 2023: Reached around 90,000 after EV policy rollout
- 2024: Crossed 1.12 lakh registrations
- 2025: Surpassed 1.23 lakh EVs
In 2026 so far, out of nearly 8 lakh total vehicle registrations, about 68,000 are electric vehicles, indicating continued momentum.
EV Policy Boosts Adoption in Bihar
The growth accelerated significantly after the implementation of Bihar’s EV policy in 2023. The government’s support measures, incentives, and awareness initiatives have encouraged both consumers and manufacturers to adopt electric mobility.
The trend also reflects increasing affordability and expanding EV options in the market.
Government Targets Top EV State Status by 2030
Transport Minister Damodar Raut said the rising EV trend is a positive step toward environmental protection and sustainable development. He emphasized that Bihar could emerge among the leading EV-adopting states by 2030 if the current growth rate continues.
He added that EV adoption will reduce air pollution, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, and ensure a cleaner environment for future generations.
EV Policy 2026 and Subsidy Support
To further accelerate adoption, the state has implemented the Electric Vehicle (Amendment) Policy 2026. Under this initiative, the government is providing subsidies under the “Environment-Friendly Transport Employment Scheme” for purchasing:
- Two-wheelers
- Three-wheelers
- Four-wheelers
The policy also promotes the development of EV charging infrastructure across public, private, and commercial spaces.
Rapid Expansion of Charging Infrastructure
Major cities such as Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur are witnessing rapid installation of EV charging stations. The government has set a target to establish at least 500 charging stations across Bihar within the next two years.
Officials believe that expanding charging infrastructure will further encourage EV adoption and reduce range anxiety among users.
With a nearly 10-fold rise in EV registrations over five years, Bihar is steadily transitioning toward clean and sustainable transportation. Backed by strong policy support, financial incentives, and expanding infrastructure, the state is positioning itself as a growing hub for electric mobility in India.
