In a remarkable display of coordination and patriotism, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have entered the record books by unfurling the largest Indian national flag beneath the sea. The historic event took place at Swaraj Dweep (earlier known as Havelock Island), one of the most popular tourist hubs in the Bay of Bengal.
The tricolour measured an impressive 60 metres in length and 40 metres in width, making it the largest Indian flag ever displayed underwater. The attempt was successfully completed around 10 am with the participation of nearly 200 divers.
The diving team included trained personnel from multiple government bodies such as the forest department and marine police, along with skilled private divers. Notably, Lieutenant Governor Admiral (Retd.) Devendra Kumar Joshi also joined the dive, highlighting the administration’s direct involvement in the initiative.
Tourism Push Through Global Recognition
Officials stated that the record attempt is part of a broader strategy to position the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a leading global destination for scuba diving and marine tourism. By achieving international recognition, the administration aims to attract adventure enthusiasts and divers from across the world.
Key Objectives Behind the Initiative:
- Promote the islands as a top global scuba diving destination
- Highlight the region’s rich underwater biodiversity
- Encourage eco-friendly and sustainable tourism practices
- Boost international tourism and visibility
The initiative also emphasises conservation awareness, showcasing the pristine marine ecosystem and the need to protect it.
Another Guinness Record Attempt in the Pipeline
Building on the momentum, the administration is preparing for another ambitious attempt to set a Guinness World Record. The upcoming challenge involves creating the tallest human stack underwater, targeting a height of at least 10 metres near the Swaraj Dweep jetty lighthouse.
Authorities believe such large-scale, well-coordinated events will not only demonstrate the islands’ adventure tourism potential but also bring significant national and international attention.
With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and growing focus on sustainable tourism, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are steadily strengthening their position on the global tourism map.
