New Delhi: In a major development for India’s power sector, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a massive Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract worth over ₹21,000 crore for the 3×800 MW Meja Supercritical Thermal Power Project (Stage-II) in Uttar Pradesh.
The order has been awarded by Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL), a joint venture between NTPC Limited and UP Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL), through an international competitive bidding (ICB) process.
Notification of Award Issued on June 4, 2026
BHEL received the official Notification of Award (NOA) on June 4, 2026. The company confirmed the development in its stock exchange disclosure, stating that the contract covers the complete EPC scope for the project.
The award is one of the largest thermal power orders secured by BHEL in recent years, strengthening its position in India’s power equipment and infrastructure sector.
Project to Add 2,400 MW Supercritical Power Capacity
The Meja Stage-II project, located in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh, will add 2,400 MW of electricity generation capacity to the national grid.
The project includes three supercritical thermal power units of 800 MW each. Supercritical technology is known for:
- Higher fuel efficiency
- Lower emissions compared to conventional coal-based plants
- Improved operational performance
This makes the project a key contributor to cleaner and more efficient thermal power generation in India.
Complete EPC Scope Awarded to BHEL
Under the contract, BHEL will be responsible for the entire execution of the project, including:
- Design and engineering
- Manufacturing and supply of equipment
- Construction and erection work
- Testing and commissioning of units
The company will execute the project from start to finish under a full EPC model.
70-Month Timeline for Completion
BHEL is required to complete the project within 70 months from the date of award, placing the expected commissioning timeline in early 2032.
Once operational, the project is expected to significantly strengthen power availability in northern India, particularly Uttar Pradesh and surrounding regions.
Boost to India’s Energy Security and Power Demand
The project comes at a time when India is witnessing a steady rise in electricity demand driven by:
- Rapid industrial growth
- Urban expansion
- Increasing household consumption
The Meja supercritical plant is expected to enhance grid stability and support long-term energy security objectives, while adding significant capacity to the national power infrastructure.
Strengthening BHEL’s Order Book
The contract further reinforces BHEL’s role as a leading player in India’s power sector. The company’s expanding order book reflects continued demand for domestic engineering capabilities in large-scale thermal power projects.
