New Delhi: The Vice-President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, released the book “The Voice of Justice: Justice Gavai Speaks” at Uprashtrapati Bhavan, highlighting the importance of constitutional values, judicial responsibility, and access to justice in a democratic society.
Edited by Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar and published by Thomson Reuters in association with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (C.L.E.A.), the book brings together speeches, lectures, and reflections of former Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai.
Vice-President Calls Book an Important Constitutional Document
Addressing the gathering, Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan described the book as an important constitutional document that reflects judicial thought shaped by experience, constitutional discipline, and public responsibility.
He said the volume provides valuable insights into:
- Constitutionalism.
- Rule of law.
- Social justice.
- Democratic governance.
The Vice-President noted that the book will contribute significantly to constitutional discussions and legal scholarship in India.
Constitution Remains Foundation of Democratic Stability and Unity
Speaking about the reflections on the Constitution included in the book, the Vice-President said the Constitution of India is a living and evolving document that has successfully balanced continuity with change, authority with accountability, and rights with duties over the past 75 years.
He stated that the Constitution remains the foundation of democratic stability and national unity, while the power of Parliament to amend it allows the country to respond to changing social and national requirements.
Judiciary Plays Key Role in Protecting Constitutional Governance
The Vice-President highlighted the important role of the judiciary in preserving constitutional governance and maintaining citizens’ confidence in the rule of law.
He said that in a constitutional democracy, restraint is as important as authority, and strong institutions and justice are sustained through:
- Institutional integrity.
- Constitutional discipline.
- Public trust.
- Commitment to democratic values.
He emphasised that judicial responsibility goes beyond delivering judgments and includes protecting the principles on which democracy is built.
Constitutional Governance Must Address Citizens’ Aspirations
C.P. Radhakrishnan said constitutional governance must remain responsive to the aspirations of ordinary citizens and changing social realities.
He stressed the importance of empowering marginalised communities to ensure dignity, equal opportunities, and hope for every individual.
Praising Justice B.R. Gavai’s judicial contributions, the Vice-President said his journey reflects a strong commitment to constitutional values, institutional balance, and ensuring access to justice.
Vice-President Appeals for Free Legal Aid for Poor Citizens
Concluding his address, the Vice-President appealed to members of the legal fraternity to provide pro bono legal services to the poorest sections of society at regular intervals.
He said such efforts would help ensure that justice remains accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial background.
