Goa: Indigenous Marine Jet Power (MJP) waterjets have successfully completed their maiden factory acceptance trials (FATs) in Goa, marking a major achievement for India’s defence sector. The Indian Coast Guard officially announced the successful trials, calling them a significant step towards reducing import dependence and strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. The waterjets will be installed on 14 new Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built for the Coast Guard.
Indian Coast Guard Successfully Conducts Indigenous Marine Jet Power Waterjet
The Indian Coast Guard witnessed the successful Maiden Factory Acceptance Trials (FATs) of Indigenous Marine Jet Power (MJP) waterjets in Goa. The trials were conducted for advanced waterjet propulsion systems that will power 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) currently under construction at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).
According to the official statement, the successful tests confirm that the systems have met important factory-level performance and quality standards before installation on the vessels.
What Are Indigenous Marine Jet Power Waterjets
Marine Jet Power (MJP) waterjets are modern propulsion systems used in high-speed defence and patrol vessels. Unlike traditional propellers, waterjets push water at high speed to move the vessel forward. This technology offers several benefits, including:
- Higher speed
- Better manoeuvrability
- Safe operation in shallow waters
- Lower risk of propeller damage
- Improved performance during rescue and security missions
These advantages make waterjets ideal for Coast Guard operations.
Why Are These Waterjets Important
The successful trials are important because they support India’s goal of becoming self-reliant in defence manufacturing.
Earlier, many advanced marine propulsion systems were imported from other countries. Developing these systems in India helps:
- Reduce import dependence
- Strengthen the Make in India initiative
- Support Aatmanirbhar Bharat
- Improve India’s defence manufacturing capability
- Create advanced technology within the country
How Will These Waterjets Be Used
The indigenous MJP waterjets will be installed on 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. These patrol vessels will help the Indian Coast Guard in:
- Coastal surveillance
- Maritime security
- Search and rescue operations
- Anti-smuggling missions
- Quick response during emergencies
The new vessels will improve India’s ability to protect its coastline and maritime borders.
Official Statement by the Indian Coast Guard
In its official post, the Indian Coast Guard said the successful Factory Acceptance Trials of the indigenous waterjets are:
- A major step towards maritime self-reliance.
- An important milestone for the 14 Fast Patrol Vessel project.
- A significant achievement in reducing import dependence.
- A boost to India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
