Delhi Govt Launches New EV Policy: Get Up to ₹1 Lakh Incentive on Electric Car Purchase by Scrapping Old Vehicles

Delhi’s New EV Policy Aims to Reduce Pollution and Boost Electric Vehicle Adoption with Incentives for Cars, Two-Wheelers, and Three-Wheelers
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: In a major step towards reducing air pollution and promoting electric mobility, the Delhi government has launched a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy. Under this policy, residents who scrap their old vehicles and purchase new electric cars can avail up to ₹1 lakh incentive, aiming to encourage the adoption of cleaner, sustainable transport in the capital.

Incentive Scheme for Old Vehicle Scrapping

The new EV policy provides substantial benefits for Delhi residents looking to replace their old vehicles with electric ones. Key features of the scheme include:

  • Old Vehicle Scrapping: Residents must take their old vehicles to a registered scrapping center.
  • Purchase Timeline: The new electric vehicle must be purchased within six months of scrapping the old vehicle.
  • Incentive Amount: Buyers of electric cars can receive up to ₹1 lakh directly in their bank account.

The initiative is designed to phase out older petrol and diesel vehicles, reduce vehicular emissions, and accelerate the transition to electric mobility in Delhi.

Benefits for Two-Wheelers and Three-Wheelers

The scheme also extends incentives to other vehicle categories:

  • Motorcycles and Scooters: ₹10,000 incentive for scrapped vehicles.
  • Three-Wheeler Vehicles: ₹25,000 incentive for scrapping old three-wheelers.

This approach ensures that the benefits are accessible across various vehicle types, encouraging broader adoption of electric vehicles in the city.

Targeting the First 1 Lakh Vehicles

The incentive under the new EV policy will initially apply to the first 1 lakh vehicles purchased. This move aims to rapidly boost the number of electric vehicles on Delhi roads while gradually reducing the share of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles.

Tackling Delhi’s Pollution Crisis

Delhi has over 61 lakh old vehicles, including 41 lakh two-wheelers, 18 lakh four-wheelers, and 2 lakh other vehicles, most of which have completed their operational lifespan. The city has long struggled with high air pollution, and this EV initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve air quality and promote sustainable transport solutions.

Expected Growth in Electric Vehicle Adoption

The EV policy is expected to further accelerate the growth of electric vehicle sales in Delhi, which has already seen a sharp increase over the past year. Experts estimate that adoption rates could rise by up to 20 percent, marking a significant shift towards greener mobility in the capital.

Delhi Government’s Vision for a Cleaner Future

Through this policy, the Delhi government aims to reduce reliance on petrol and diesel vehicles, curb air pollution, and incentivize citizens to adopt electric vehicles. With direct financial incentives and an accessible scrapping system, this initiative could become a game-changer in urban transport sustainability.
