Large-scale investments in metro expansion, electric buses, expressways, and public health facilities are aimed at improving urban mobility and overall quality of life in the capital.
Officials highlighted that ongoing projects are helping address long-standing issues such as traffic congestion, inadequate public transport, and uneven healthcare access across the city.
Expansion of Public Transport System in Delhi
A key focus area of development has been strengthening Delhi’s public transport network. Authorities have acknowledged that current capacity remains below demand, with the city requiring over 11,000 buses, while only around 6,000 are currently operational.
To address this gap, the government is expanding both metro connectivity and bus fleets. Major steps include:
- Expansion of metro network to approximately 400 km already completed
- Work underway on 180 km of new metro lines
- Integration of additional metro corridors in planning stage
Officials stated that improving metro connectivity is essential to reducing road congestion and enhancing commuter convenience.

Massive Electric Bus Induction Plan
Delhi’s transition toward clean mobility is being supported by large-scale electric bus deployment.
Key highlights include:
- Over 4,550 electric buses already introduced under central schemes
- More than 6,130 additional electric buses planned under the PM e-Drive initiative
- Total requirement of public buses estimated at over 11,000
The initiative aims to modernize public transport while reducing pollution levels in the national capital.
₹1.25 Lakh Crore Investment in Road Infrastructure
The city’s road infrastructure is also undergoing significant expansion, supported by an estimated ₹1.25 lakh crore investment over the past 12 years.
Major completed and ongoing projects include:
- Delhi–Meerut Expressway
- Dwarka Expressway
- Delhi–Mumbai Expressway
- Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways
- Urban Extension Road-II
- Delhi–Dehradun Expressway
Several additional road projects are currently under construction to further improve inter-city and intra-city connectivity.
Focus on Healthcare Expansion and Public Welfare
Healthcare infrastructure has also seen major development through government-backed schemes and investments.
Key developments include:
- Over 43,000 people treated free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme in one year
- 370 “Arogya Mandirs” established, with a target of 1,100 centers
- Development of 11 integrated health laboratories underway
- New trauma center being built at GTB Hospital at a cost of ₹200 crore
These initiatives aim to strengthen primary and emergency healthcare services across Delhi.
Urban Development and Employment Initiatives
In addition to infrastructure, skill development and employment generation programs have also been expanded.
- 78,000 people reportedly employed under skill development initiatives
- ₹1,550 crore allocated for cleanliness and waste management improvements
- ₹3,000 crore invested under AMRUT-2 for sewage and sanitation upgrades in unauthorized colonies
- Additional ₹821 crore assistance planned for infrastructure development in the current financial year
Authorities emphasized ongoing efforts to reduce pollution, manage waste, and improve urban sanitation.
Road Decongestion and New Connectivity Projects
Major projects are also being implemented to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity:
- ₹35,000 crore worth of decongestion projects underway
- Road link from Sarai Kale Khan to Jewar Airport in progress
- Completed and ongoing upgrades on routes including Akshardham–Badarpur, Punjabi Bagh–Tikri Border, and INA–Mahipalpur
These projects are expected to significantly ease traffic flow across key corridors in Delhi.
