New Delhi: The Delhi government is set to modernize around 93,000 streetlights by converting them into a smart LED lighting system. The initiative aims to improve road visibility, enable real-time monitoring, enhance energy efficiency, and strengthen road safety across the capital.
A key feature of the project is a performance-based payment model, under which contractors will be paid based on the operational efficiency of the streetlight system rather than fixed lump-sum payments.
Smart LED Streetlights to Replace Old Lighting Systems
Under the project, the Public Works Department (PWD) will replace existing sodium vapour lamps and older LED streetlights with modern smart LED units.
Additionally, the government plans to install around 5,000 new electric poles to ensure better illumination in poorly lit areas and improve coverage across road networks.
Performance-Based Payment to Increase Accountability
In the new system, contractors will receive payments only when streetlights function properly and maintenance standards are met.
If lights remain faulty or repairs are delayed, payments will be impacted. Officials believe this will increase contractor accountability and ensure better long-term maintenance of the infrastructure.
Central Command and Control Centre for Real-Time Monitoring
A central command and control centre will be set up at the PWD headquarters to monitor all streetlights in real time.
The smart lighting system will allow authorities to adjust brightness levels based on weather conditions and traffic requirements, improving efficiency and responsiveness.
Energy Savings and Cost Reduction Expected
According to the finance department’s assessment, the shift to smart LED lighting is expected to significantly reduce electricity consumption.
The government estimates savings of around ₹300 crore over the next five years, making the project both cost-effective and environmentally beneficial.
CCTV Cameras Also to Be Upgraded
Alongside the streetlight modernization project, the Delhi government will also replace around 1.4 lakh Chinese-origin CCTV cameras installed across the city in phases.
In the first phase, approximately 50,000 cameras will be replaced to improve surveillance quality and strengthen public safety infrastructure.
The Delhi government’s smart streetlight initiative marks a major step toward building a safer, more energy-efficient, and technology-driven urban infrastructure. With real-time monitoring, performance-based accountability, and large-scale CCTV upgrades, the project is expected to significantly enhance road safety and reduce operational costs in the coming years.
