In one of the biggest organisational overhauls in recent years, the Ministry of Finance has approved a comprehensive cadre restructuring of the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), substantially expanding its manpower across multiple divisions.
According to Sanction Order No. 2/2025 issued from Kartavya Bhawan-1, New Delhi, the restructuring aims to strengthen the ED’s operational, legal, adjudication, technical, and administrative capacities amid increasing financial crime investigations and enforcement responsibilities.
Under the revised structure, the number of Deputy Director posts has been increased from 148 to 267, while Assistant Director posts have more than doubled from 255 to 531. Similarly, Enforcement Officer positions have risen from 355 to 606, and Assistant Enforcement Officer posts from 425 to 803.

Expansion Across Wings
The restructuring also covers the Legal Cadre, Adjudication Wing, Systems Cadre, Ministerial Cadre, Security Cadre, and Support Staff. Several new posts have been sanctioned in technical assistance, official language services, stenography, and driver categories to improve institutional efficiency.
Officials said the expenditure arising from the restructuring will be met from the sanctioned budget grant of the Directorate of Enforcement, New Delhi.
The move is being viewed as a significant attempt to modernise and expand the agency’s enforcement capabilities as it handles an increasing number of cases related to money laundering, foreign exchange violations, and economic offences across the country.
