New Delhi: India Space Laboratories in Universities is the latest major initiative by the Government of India to strengthen the country’s fast-growing space sector. According to an official report, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has reviewed a plan to establish space labs across universities and colleges. 

In the first phase, seven such labs will be set up to provide students with hands-on learning in satellite systems, rocketry, and mission design. This move aims to build a strong talent pipeline and support India’s rapidly expanding private space ecosystem.

The government plans to establish seven space laboratories in the initial phase across universities and colleges in India.

  • Private investment has crossed USD 600 million in the last five years
  • The number of space startups has increased from single digits in 2019 to over 400 by 2026

The new space labs aim to fill this talent gap by preparing students with industry-ready skills.

To support innovation, the government has introduced multiple funding initiatives:

  • ₹1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund for growth-stage startups
  • Technology Adoption Fund to help early-stage innovations
  • Seed funding and mentorship for startups at the idea and prototype stage

These measures aim to convert ideas into commercially viable products and strengthen the space startup ecosystem. 

Skill Development and Training Programs

The government is also focusing on building a skilled workforce.

  • 17 specialized training programs have already been completed
  • Nearly 900 participants have been trained in key space technologies

The upcoming space labs will further enhance this effort by offering hands-on learning opportunities to students across India.

New opportunities are being created through:

  • Shared satellite platforms for startups
  • Expanded testing and integration facilities
  • Technology transfer programs

  • Partnerships with over 45 countries
  • Collaborations with nations like Singapore and UAE
  • Increasing participation in international space forums

This reflects rising global confidence in India’s space capabilities.

IN-SPACe Role in Driving Growth

The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) is playing a key role in enabling private sector participation.

  • Over 1,000 applications received from startups and institutions
  • 129 authorizations granted so far

This shows strong industry interest and growing trust in India’s reformed space ecosystem.
