New Delhi: The Lok Sabha seats increase proposal is a major new development in India’s political system. As per official updates, the Central Government is planning a constitutional amendment to increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats to 850. The proposal also aims to allow delimitation before the 2026 Census.

What Is the Lok Sabha Seats Increase Proposal?

The Centre is planning two big changes:

  • Increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850
  • Allow delimitation before the 2026 Census

These changes are meant to improve representation as India’s population has grown over time.

What Is Delimitation?

Delimitation means changing the boundaries of election areas.

Important Points:

  • It is done based on population
  • It decides how many people one MP represents
  • The last major exercise was based on the 2001 Census
  • Changes are currently frozen until 2026

Now, the government wants to allow this process earlier.

Government Stand for Lok Sabha Seats Increase

The government believes more seats are needed due to population growth.

Reasons:

  • Many areas now have too many people per MP
  • Some MPs represent more than 20 lakh people
  • More seats can improve communication between people and leaders
  • It may make governance easier

What Changes Are Needed?

To make this happen, the Constitution will need to be changed.

Process:

  • A bill must be passed in Parliament
  • Many states must also approve it
  • Rules related to seat limits and delimitation will be updated

Political Impact

This proposal can affect states in different ways.

Concerns:

  • States with lower population growth may get fewer seats
  • States with higher population may get more seats
  • There may be debates about fairness

Government View:

The Centre may try to keep balance so that no state feels treated unfairly.

What Happens Next?

  • The proposal is not final yet
  • A bill may be introduced soon
  • There will be discussions and debates in Parliament

If passed, this will be a very big change in India’s election system.
