Kerala: The Kerala High Court has directed the Kerala government and forest authorities to maintain strict surveillance on a rogue wild elephant named “KM1” near Aralam Farm in Kannur district.
The Human-Wildlife Conflict in Kerala has again come into focus after the court warned authorities to prevent any further attacks or mishaps involving the elephant. The court stressed that “every life is precious” and said officials must stay alert in tribal and residential areas affected by elephant movement.

The bench also observed that authorities must ensure no further loss of life due to the elephant’s movement.
Why Is Elephant KM1 Considered Dangerous?
According to reports presented before the court:
- KM1 has frequently entered areas near Aralam Farm
- Local residents claim the elephant has attacked humans earlier
- Tribal communities in the area are living in fear
- Several deadly elephant attacks have already occurred in the region
Media reports and court submissions mentioned that a man named Aneesh was allegedly killed in a wild elephant attack earlier this year. Residents also linked previous fatal attacks in the area to the same elephant.
Elephant KM1 Case: Human-Wildlife Conflict in Kerala Remains Serious
Kerala has witnessed a sharp rise in human-elephant conflict in recent years, especially in forest-border districts like Kannur, Wayanad, and Idukki.
Major reasons include:
- Expansion of human settlements near forests
- Shrinking wildlife habitats
- Increased elephant movement into farms and villages
- Lack of strong preventive infrastructure
The Kerala High Court had earlier also criticized the state government over inadequate safety measures in Aralam Farm after deadly elephant attacks.
What Is Happening in Aralam Farm?
Aralam Farm is one of the most sensitive wildlife conflict zones in Kerala.
Officials and local groups have repeatedly demanded:
- Elephant-proof walls
- Hanging solar fences
- More rapid response teams
- Better night patrol systems
- Immediate tracking of rogue elephants
Following earlier protests in the area, the Kerala government reportedly promised stronger protection measures and compensation support for victims’ families.
Court Emphasises Protection of Citizens
The High Court clearly stated that the safety of citizens, especially tribal residents, cannot be ignored. The bench reminded authorities that protection of human life is a primary responsibility of the state.
The matter is expected to come up again before the court later this month, where the government may submit details of the action taken against the threat posed by KM1.
