At a time when electoral administration in West Bengal remains under intense political and public scrutiny, senior IAS officer Neelam Meena has been appointed as the state’s new Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The appointment comes shortly after Manoj Kumar Agarwal was elevated as the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, creating a vacancy in one of the state’s most crucial administrative positions ahead of future electoral exercises.
ELECTION COMMISSION ISSUES APPOINTMENT ORDER
In a formal communication to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, the Election Commission of India confirmed the appointment of Meena, a 1998-batch IAS officer of the West Bengal cadre, as the new CEO of the state.
The poll body also clarified that Meena would not hold any additional charge in the state government while serving in the post, underlining the importance of maintaining administrative neutrality and focus in electoral management.

SUCCESSOR TO MANOJ KUMAR AGARWAL
Meena succeeds Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who recently assumed charge as the state’s Chief Secretary after the BJP government took office in the state.
As CEO, Agarwal had played a significant role in overseeing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and managing highly sensitive and politically charged election processes in West Bengal.
Officials noted that the state government had forwarded a panel of three senior IAS officers to the Election Commission for consideration.
PANEL OF SENIOR IAS OFFICERS
Apart from Neelam Meena, the panel reportedly included senior IAS officers Tanmay Chakrabarty and Moumita Godara Basu.
The appointment is being seen as an important administrative development as West Bengal continues to remain politically significant in the national electoral landscape.
With Meena now at the helm of the state’s election machinery, attention will shift towards preparations for upcoming electoral exercises and maintaining transparency in the electoral process.
