New Delhi: The Su-57 stealth fighter jet has emerged as a major topic ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India for the BRICS Summit.

According to official statements from the Kremlin, discussions on the possible sale of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets and technology-sharing arrangements with India are on Putin’s agenda. The development highlights the growing focus on advanced defence cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow.

Russia Confirms Su-57 Stealth Fighter Discussions With India

Russia has officially indicated that the potential sale of Su-57 stealth fighters to India will be discussed during high-level talks between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the Su-57 is among Russia’s most advanced military aircraft and confirmed that discussions with India on the platform are ongoing. The issue is expected to be part of broader defence cooperation talks during Putin’s visit to India.

What Is The Su-57 Stealth Fighter

The Su-57 is Russia’s fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and multi-role combat missions. The aircraft combines stealth features, advanced sensors, high-speed performance, and the ability to carry a wide range of weapons. It entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces and is considered the flagship of Russia’s fighter aviation programme.

Why The Aircraft Matters To India

India is looking at multiple options to strengthen the Indian Air Force as it faces the challenge of maintaining adequate fighter squadron strength. The Su-57 could potentially provide India with a fifth-generation combat capability while indigenous programmes such as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) continue to progress.

Su-57 Stealth Fighter Technology Transfer Could Be A Key Part Of Talks

According to Russian officials, India has shown interest not only in acquiring aircraft but also in gaining access to production technologies associated with the Su-57 programme.

Russian authorities have indicated that discussions are underway regarding possible technology cooperation, though specific details have not been made public.

Joint Production Possibility Remains Open

Russia has repeatedly expressed willingness to manufacture the Su-57 in India and support technology transfer under long-term defence cooperation arrangements.

Previous Russian proposals included local production with Indian industry participation and integration of Indian systems.

India And Russia Have A Long History Of Fighter Aircraft Cooperation

India and Russia have cooperated for decades on major defence projects, including the Su-30MKI fighter programme.

The two countries had earlier partnered on a fifth-generation fighter initiative, although India later exited that programme in 2018 due to concerns regarding cost, technology access, and operational requirements. Despite that decision, discussions on advanced fighter cooperation have continued over the years.

BrahMos Upgrade Also On The Agenda

The upcoming India-Russia discussions are not expected to focus only on the Su-57. Russian officials have also confirmed that both countries are examining upgrades to the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile programme to improve its effectiveness and export competitiveness. The BrahMos project remains one of the most successful defence collaborations between India and Russia.

Other Strategic Issues Expected During Putin’s Visit

Apart from fighter aircraft discussions, leaders are expected to review cooperation in air defence systems, energy, trade, and nuclear power. Reports indicate that additional defence projects and long-term strategic partnerships will be discussed during the summit.

What This Means For India’s Defence Modernisation

If discussions on the Su-57 move forward, India could gain access to one of Russia’s most advanced combat aircraft platforms. However, no official procurement decision has been announced.

Current talks remain at the discussion stage, and any future agreement would require detailed evaluation by the Indian government and the Indian Air Force.
