New Delhi: In a significant move to strengthen India’s electricity distribution network, REC Limited and the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance quality testing and assurance mechanisms for materials used in power projects under the government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
The collaboration focuses on ensuring that equipment, components, and materials deployed in RDSS projects meet the highest quality standards through advanced testing, technical support, and improved quality control systems. The initiative is expected to improve the reliability, efficiency, and long-term performance of electricity distribution networks across the country.
REC and CPRI MoU Signed at Gurugram Corporate Office
The MoU was signed at the REC Corporate Office in Gurugram by Yogendra Singh, General Manager and Head of PMD Quality, REC, and Dr. M.G. Anandakumar, Joint Director (BD & CBS Division), CPRI.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both organisations, including Prince Dhawan, IAS, Executive Director (PMD), REC, and Dr. Neha Adhikari, Joint Director, CPRI, along with other representatives from REC and CPRI.
The agreement marks a major step toward developing stronger quality assurance practices for electricity distribution projects being implemented under RDSS.
Focus on Third-Party Quality Testing of RDSS Materials
Under the partnership, REC and CPRI will work together to introduce stronger quality monitoring systems for materials used in RDSS projects.
As part of the agreement, CPRI will provide independent third-party testing services to verify the quality and performance of power sector equipment and materials. This will help ensure that products used in distribution infrastructure comply with required technical standards and specifications.
The quality testing process will support better decision-making and reduce the chances of equipment failure, helping distribution networks operate more efficiently.
Key Areas of Collaboration Between REC and CPRI
The partnership will focus on several important areas, including:
Independent Testing and Quality Verification
CPRI will conduct third-party testing of materials and equipment used in RDSS projects. This independent assessment will ensure that infrastructure components meet safety, performance, and reliability standards before being deployed.
Technical Support and Capacity Building
REC and CPRI will collaborate on technical assistance programs, knowledge sharing, and training initiatives. These efforts will help improve the skills and expertise of professionals working in the power distribution sector.
Development of Strong Quality Frameworks
Both organisations will work together to create effective quality assurance frameworks and guidelines. These frameworks will help maintain consistent standards across RDSS projects and improve overall project execution.
How the Partnership Will Benefit India’s Power Sector
The REC-CPRI collaboration is expected to play an important role in improving the quality of electricity infrastructure being developed across India.
By ensuring better testing and monitoring of project materials, the partnership will contribute to:
- Improved reliability of electricity distribution networks
- Reduction in equipment-related failures
- Better operational efficiency for power utilities
- Stronger implementation of RDSS projects
- Development of a more resilient power sector
The initiative supports the government’s objective of modernising India’s power distribution system and providing consumers with more reliable electricity services.
