Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has described the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Act’ as a strong foundation for women-led development in India, saying it will empower the country’s daughters with leadership opportunities and equal participation in governance.
Addressing the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Conference’ in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister urged broader support for the legislation, calling it a transformative step for women empowerment.
Women at the Core of India’s Progress: CM Rekha Gupta
CM Rekha Gupta said that women’s strength lies at the heart of India’s development, global identity, and progress. She noted that India has moved beyond the era of concern over the safety and existence of girls and is now entering a phase of “Beti Badhao” under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
She added that women in India are now making their mark across all sectors, from education and nutrition to national defence, where women pilots are actively flying fighter jets and protecting the country.
Government Schemes Strengthening Women Empowerment
Highlighting various welfare initiatives, the Chief Minister said that several central government schemes have significantly contributed to women’s dignity and empowerment, including:
- Swachh Bharat Mission (access to sanitation facilities)
- Ujjwala Yojana (clean cooking fuel access)
- Jan Dhan Yojana (financial inclusion and independence)
She said these initiatives have played a key role in improving dignity, safety, and financial independence for women across the country.
“Women Excel When Given Opportunities”: CM
Rekha Gupta emphasized that women consistently perform exceptionally when given opportunities, even in the most challenging roles. She credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for placing women’s dignity and safety at the center of national policymaking.
She also expressed gratitude for initiatives that aim to expand opportunities for women across sectors and promote inclusive growth.
What is the Nari Shakti Vandan Act?
The Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023, commonly known as the Women’s Reservation Act, is aimed at increasing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
According to proposed updates:
- Lok Sabha strength may be increased to 816 seats
- Around 273 seats may be reserved for women
- Implementation is expected from the 2029 general elections
Reports also suggest that the Union Cabinet has approved a draft amendment bill linked to the Act.
Parliament Special Session Expected to Discuss Amendment
The government has extended the ongoing Budget Session, and a three-day special Parliament session from April 16 to 18 is scheduled.
During this session, the proposed amendment bill related to the Act is expected to be discussed and potentially passed, marking a significant step in India’s legislative reform for women’s representation.
CM Rekha Gupta’s remarks underline the growing political focus on women-led development in India. The proposed strengthening of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act is being seen as a major step toward enhancing women’s participation in governance and shaping a more inclusive democratic system.
