Hyderabad: The Government of Telangana has appointed former Director General of Police B Shivadhar Reddy, an IPS officer of 1994 batch from Telangana cadre, as the State Security Advisor (SSA) following his retirement from service.
Reddy, who served as the acting DGP, concluded his 32-year-long policing career on Thursday.

He was accorded a ceremonial farewell parade at the RBVRR Telangana Police Academy, where colleagues and officials paid tribute to his distinguished service.
Reflecting on his journey, Reddy described his career as one filled with challenges, learning, and memorable experiences.

New Role as State Security Advisor
According to a government order issued on April 30, Reddy has been appointed as SSA for a period of three years from the date he assumes charge.
In this role, he will advise the state government on key areas including:
- Policing and law & order
- Internal security
- Crime control
- Narcotics regulation
- Road safety
He will hold a status equivalent to that of the Chief Secretary and receive a fixed remuneration of ₹2.25 lakh per month.
About Him: Career and Professional Journey
Mr. Reddy, a 1994-batch IPS officer, hails from Tool-e-Kalan in Pedda Tundla, Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Ranga Reddy district. Before becoming Director General of Police (DGP), he served as the Chief of the Telangana Intelligence Department. A law graduate (LL.B.) from Osmania University, he initially worked as an advocate before clearing the Civil Services Examination in 1994.
With over 30 years of distinguished service, he has held several important roles at both district and state levels across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana after bifurcation. He began his police career as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Visakhapatnam and later served as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Nalgonda, Srikakulam, Nellore, and Guntur. In Hyderabad, he worked as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) and DCP South Zone, notably maintaining peace after the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast during periods of communal tension.
He has extensive experience in traffic management, intelligence, anti-corruption, and police administration. He served in elite forces like the Greyhounds and also participated in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) in 2003, gaining international recognition. After Telangana’s formation in 2014, he became the first Chief of its Intelligence Department. He later served as Commissioner of Police in Visakhapatnam, Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and headed the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) and Personnel Wing. He returned as Intelligence Chief in 2023 and was promoted to DGP in August 2024.
Initiatives, Awards, and Recognition
Mr. Reddy is known for his public-centric policing initiatives. He launched the “Arrive Alive” road safety campaign in Visakhapatnam, introduced public complaint boxes in Telangana to improve police-public interaction, and promoted CCTV-based crime prevention in collaboration with hotel owners in 2016. In June 2025, he received a Certificate of Excellence from the Minister of External Affairs for his contribution to the passport verification system through the VeriFast mobile app.
His outstanding service has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Police Medal for Gallantry (2002), United Nations Medal (2003), Indian Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2011), Asadharan Aasuchana Kushalta Padak (2018) for excellence in intelligence work, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2020).

Following his retirement, senior-most IPS officer C V Anand has taken over as the new chief of the state police force.
Reflections on Policing and Modernisation
During his farewell address, Reddy highlighted the transformation of policing over the decades, noting the significant modernisation of the force compared to earlier decades.
He emphasised the importance of people-friendly policing, stating that the Telangana Police have aligned their functioning with this approach.
Message to Young Officers
Reddy urged younger officers to uphold the reputation of the police force and stressed that the true strength of policing lies in serving with dignity and earning public trust.
He also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving as DGP, calling it one of the most significant roles of his career.
Continuing Contribution Post Retirement
With his appointment as State Security Advisor, Reddy is set to continue contributing to Telangana’s internal security and governance framework, bringing his extensive experience to the role.
