Telangana Police Using Only 60% of Available Technology Systems, Says DGP C.V. Anand

DGP Calls for Stronger Digital Policing, Real-Time Data Updates and Greater Use of Forensic Technologies
Indian Masterminds Stories

Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police C V Anand has said that the Telangana Police, once considered one of India’s leading forces in adopting technology-driven policing, has fallen behind in certain areas due to inadequate utilisation of available technological systems and gaps in field-level implementation.

Addressing Station House Officers (SHOs) and officers from various police units through a video conference from the DGP Office in Hyderabad on Monday, Anand stressed the need for effective use of existing technological resources, real-time data management and stronger implementation of digital policing systems across the state.

He emphasized that technology in policing is not merely about creating software applications but ensuring their effective utilisation, regular updating and seamless integration into day-to-day police work.

Telangana Police Must Strengthen Technology Utilisation

During the review meeting, discussions focused on digital policing applications, Telangana Cop platforms, technological systems, operational challenges and implementation issues at the field level.

The DGP observed that developing technological systems alone would not yield results unless they were effectively implemented at the grassroots level.

According to him, several technological initiatives introduced by the department remain underutilized despite their potential to improve policing outcomes.

Technology must be actively used and continuously updated to deliver meaningful results,” he stressed during the review.

Dedicated Technical Team Constituted

To address implementation challenges, Anand announced the formation of a dedicated technical team within the police department.

The team will be responsible for:

  • Technology development and enhancement.
  • Monitoring implementation of digital systems.
  • Identifying operational gaps.
  • Resolving technical issues.
  • Facilitating faster rollout of improvements.

The DGP said the new team would help bridge gaps between system development and field-level usage while ensuring technology investments deliver measurable outcomes.

Digital Initiatives Achieving Only 60% Implementation

Expressing concern over the current status of digital policing projects, Anand said implementation levels of several initiatives had reached only around 60 percent.

He noted that the progress achieved so far had fallen short of expectations and called upon officers to improve adoption rates across police stations and units.

The DGP urged field officers to make greater use of:

  • Digital forensics tools.
  • Digital evidence management systems.
  • Technology-driven investigation platforms.
  • Data analytics applications.
  • Crime monitoring software.

According to him, wider adoption of these technologies would significantly improve both the speed and quality of investigations.

Focus on Real-Time Data Management

A key issue highlighted during the review was the need for timely and accurate data entry into departmental databases.

The DGP directed officers to ensure that information collected at the field level is updated in real time and maintained accurately across all digital platforms.

He said reliable and updated databases form the foundation of modern policing and are essential for crime analysis, investigation and decision-making.

CCTNS and Crime Databases Need Regular Updates

Anand specifically instructed officers to regularly update records maintained under:

  • Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS).
  • State Crime Records Bureau databases.
  • NTR photo records.
  • Other departmental digital platforms.

He pointed out that several applications and technology modules already available within the police department are not being fully utilized by field officers.

The DGP stressed that improving data quality and database completeness would directly enhance operational efficiency.

  • SHOs Directed to Update Case Records Promptly

Addressing Station House Officers in particular, the Telangana Police chief directed them to ensure timely updating of critical case-related information.

These include:

  • FIR details.
  • Crime records.
  • Arrest information.
  • Scientific evidence records.
  • Charge sheets.
  • Investigation updates.
  • Other case-related data.

He said regular updates would strengthen data-driven policing and improve crime trend analysis, case reviews and strategic planning.

Data-Driven Policing Key to Better Crime Analysis

According to Anand, the future of policing lies in data-based decision-making and technology-supported investigations.

He noted that accurate digital records can help police:

  • Identify crime patterns.
  • Track repeat offenders.
  • Monitor investigation progress.
  • Improve resource deployment.
  • Enhance crime prevention strategies.

The DGP said technology should serve as a force multiplier that enables officers to perform their duties more efficiently and effectively.

Telangana Police Can Regain National Leadership

Despite the challenges, Anand expressed confidence that Telangana Police can once again emerge as a national leader in technology-driven policing.

He said the state had previously been recognized among the country’s most technologically advanced police forces and possesses the infrastructure necessary to reclaim that position.

With better implementation, real-time updates and stronger adoption of digital systems, Telangana Police can significantly enhance its operational capabilities and public service delivery, he added.

Senior Officers Attend Review Meeting

Several senior officers participated in the video conference, including:

  • Mahesh Bhagwat, DGP (Law and Order)
  • V V Srinivasa Rao, DG Technical Services
  • Swati Lakra, DG Organisation

Senior police officers from various districts and specialized units across Telangana also joined the review.

Key Highlights

  • Telangana Police currently utilizing only around 60% of available digital policing systems.
  • DGP C.V. Anand calls for stronger implementation of technology-driven policing.
  • Dedicated technical team formed to oversee digital initiatives.
  • SHOs directed to update FIRs, arrests, charge sheets and evidence records in real time.
  • Greater focus on digital forensics, CCTNS and data-driven investigations.
  • Telangana Police aims to regain leadership in technology-enabled policing.
