Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has issued strict directives to curb road accidents, ordering strong action against overspeeding, stunt driving, and drunk driving across the state.
Chairing a high-level road safety meeting in Lucknow, the Chief Minister expressed concern over recent accidents in districts including Lakhimpur Kheri, Amroha, Agra, and Aligarh, and emphasized that every life lost in road accidents is a major loss for society and the state.
Focus on Black Spot Identification and Accident Prevention
The Chief Minister directed officials to identify high-risk accident zones, commonly known as black spots, and conduct detailed studies on the causes of repeated accidents.
He instructed departments to prepare time-bound action plans to resolve these issues and ensure continuous monitoring at the government level through regular road safety review meetings.
Strict Action Against Overspeeding, Stunt Driving and Drunk Driving
CM Yogi made it clear that reckless driving practices such as overspeeding, stunt driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol will not be tolerated.
He ordered strict enforcement action against violators and stressed the need for coordinated efforts between police, transport, and district administration to reduce accidents.
Crackdown on Illegal Parking and Unauthorised Vehicles
The Chief Minister directed authorities to remove illegal transport stands and strictly control roadside parking. He said parking must only be allowed in designated areas and instructed officials to conduct field inspections and fix accountability of transport officers including RTO and ARTO officials.
Fitness-Linked Strict Rules for Public and School Transport
CM Yogi instructed that only vehicles with valid fitness certificates should be allowed on roads. He also directed regular health check-ups for bus drivers and conductors and ordered strict action against school vehicles operating without fitness clearance or facing repeated challan violations.
Awareness Campaigns for Helmet and Seat Belt Usage
The Chief Minister emphasized public awareness as a key pillar of road safety.
He directed the use of public address systems at intersections, toll plazas, and busy roads to promote traffic rules, along with special awareness campaigns on helmet and seat belt usage. He also suggested developing vending zones to provide safer spaces for street vendors.
Strengthening Highway Patrol and Emergency Response
The Chief Minister ordered enhanced patrolling on highways, expressways, and busy corridors to ensure quick response to accidents. He also emphasized strengthening ambulance services and ensuring adequate medical facilities at nearby hospitals for timely treatment of accident victims.
Road Accident Reduction Report Shows Improvement
Officials informed the meeting that road accidents in Uttar Pradesh have declined by 21% and fatalities by 22% between January and April 2026. The Public Works Department has been instructed to identify remaining black spots and implement corrective measures, including signage and table-top speed breakers at necessary locations.
Special Monitoring on Toll Plazas and Critical Corridors
The Chief Minister directed better traffic management and cleanliness around toll plazas and stressed regular use of public address systems for traffic awareness.
Authorities also highlighted that under the Zero Fatality District initiative, implemented across all 75 districts, 566 lives have been saved in the last four months through improved monitoring and critical corridor teams.
UP Expands Road Safety Enforcement Network
The state is strengthening its road safety infrastructure with the deployment of:
- 25 four-wheeler interceptor vehicles
- 62 two-wheeler interceptor units
- 82 speed laser guns across districts
Officials said Uttar Pradesh has become the first state in India to implement the Zero Fatality District model across all districts and critical police stations.
