The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to waive the mandatory cooling-off period for IPS officer Vidhi Kumar Birdi, clearing the way for his central deputation.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on May 30, 2026, the relaxation has been granted in accordance with IPS tenure policy provisions.

ACC Approves MHA Proposal
The official order states that the ACC has approved the Ministry of Home Affairs’ proposal for waiving the cooling-off period required before central deputation in the case of Vidhi Kumar Birdi.
The approval has been granted as a relaxation of the existing IPS Tenure Policy, allowing the officer to proceed for a central assignment without completing the prescribed cooling-off period.
AGMUT-Cadre Officer Gets Deputation Clearance
Vidhi Kumar Birdi is a 2003-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories) cadre.
The relaxation is expected to facilitate his appointment to a central government assignment, subject to further administrative orders by the concerned authorities.
What is the Cooling-Off Period?
Under central deputation rules, officers returning from a deputation assignment are generally required to serve a specified period in their parent cadre before becoming eligible for another central posting.
However, the government may relax these provisions in exceptional cases based on administrative requirements and recommendations from the concerned ministry.
Significant Move in Senior IPS Appointments
Such relaxations are relatively uncommon and are generally approved only after consideration by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
The latest decision underscores the Centre’s flexibility in deploying experienced officers for key assignments when administrative needs so require.
Further details regarding Birdi’s proposed central deputation assignment are expected to emerge once the Ministry of Home Affairs issues subsequent posting orders.
