New Delhi: Senior IAS officer Sanjay Jaju (1992: Telangana) has been repatriated from the Central government to his parent Telangana cadre, triggering strong speculation that he could be appointed as the next Chief Secretary of the state.
The repatriation, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on the request of the Telangana government, comes just days before the tenure of incumbent Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao is scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2026.
Currently serving as Secretary, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jaju’s return is being viewed as a significant administrative development in Telangana’s bureaucratic circles.
ACC Approves Repatriation to Telangana
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on June 23, the ACC approved the premature repatriation of Sanjay Jaju to Telangana.

The move is notable because IAS Jaju’s central deputation tenure was originally scheduled to continue until February 2029. Despite having nearly three years remaining at the Centre, he has been relieved and sent back to the state cadre at Telangana’s request.
Official sources view the development as a strong indication that the state government may be preparing to appoint him to the post of Chief Secretary.
Chief Secretary Race Gains Momentum
The timing of Mr Jaju’s return has intensified discussions regarding the next Chief Secretary of Telangana.
Incumbent Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, a 1991 batch IAS officer, who retired in August 2025, was granted a seven-month extension by the Centre, followed by another three-month extension. His extended tenure is due to end on June 30, 2026.
Significantly, no proposal has reportedly been moved seeking a further extension for Mr Rao, strengthening speculation that a successor may soon be announced.
Apart from Mr Jaju, senior 1992-batch IAS officers Jayesh Ranjan, Vikas Raj, and senior officer Sabyasachi Ghose are also being discussed as possible contenders for the state’s top bureaucratic post.
However, Mr Jaju’s sudden repatriation has positioned him as one of the strongest candidates.

Following the formation of Telangana in 2014, Mr Jaju moved to the Centre and has since spent over 15 years in various high-profile assignments under the Government of India.
During this period, he handled several strategic ministries and infrastructure-related portfolios, earning a reputation as a technology-driven administrator with expertise in governance reforms, infrastructure development, defence manufacturing and digital transformation.
Present Assignment: Secretary, DoNER

As IT Secretary, he spearheaded the highly acclaimed MeeSeva project, which transformed citizen service delivery by enabling hundreds of government services to be accessed digitally.
The platform became one of India’s most successful e-governance initiatives and significantly reduced the need for citizens to visit government offices for routine services.
