The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) portal has reportedly been down for several weeks, prompting criticism from former IAS officer and activist Mr. Kannan Gopinathan (2012-batch retired IAS officer.

Expressing his frustration in a social media post, Mr. Gopinathan accused the authorities of holding people’s hard-earned money “as ransom” due to unresolved technical issues.
Tagging Union Labour Minister Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, he urged immediate intervention, stating, “Dear Minister @mansukhmandviya, hopefully, you’re aware that the EPFO portal has been down for weeks now.” He further alleged that a “software update” was causing prolonged disruptions, calling it “utter incompetence.”
To support his claims, Mr. Gopinathan attached a screenshot of the Unified Member Portal, which displayed a “service unavailable” message. The error message cited “maintenance downtime or capacity problems” as the cause of the disruption, advising users to try again later. However, EPFO has not issued any official clarification or provided a timeline for resolution.
His post quickly gained traction, with numerous users sharing their struggles in accessing EPF services. Many expressed frustration over random rejection of claims, lack of support channels, and reliance on agents demanding bribes for issue resolution. Some sarcastically remarked that the portal’s failure was a feature, not a bug, meant to delay payouts. Others pointed out persistent challenges such as father’s name mismatches and password reset difficulties.
This controversy comes amid the government’s push for digital transformation in the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). Recently, EPFO introduced a regulatory update, allowing members to modify their Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number (UAN) details without submitting additional documents—a move aimed at speeding up profile updates.
Established in 1952 under the Employees’ Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, EPFO is responsible for managing provident fund accounts in India. The Unified Member Portal serves as a digital platform for employers and employees to access EPF-related services.

Hard earned money of people being held as ransom to some stupid software update.
