Born in 1979 in Kundan village, Sikar, Rajasthan, IPS Preeti Chandra’s journey from a rural background to the Indian Police Service (IPS) reflects her focus and ambition. Raised in a humble family, Preeti attended a government school far from the resources many urban aspirants enjoy. But it was here that her dream took shape: a desire to serve her country and contribute to justice. This drive motivated her to tackle the highly challenging UPSC Civil Services Examination in her first attempt in 2008, achieving an impressive All-India Rank of 255 without any formal coaching.
FROM TEACHER TO POLICYMAKER
Initially drawn to academics, Preeti completed her M.Phil. and began her career as a teacher, with an eye on journalism as a career. Yet, her goal to make a difference on a larger scale inspired her to pursue the UPSC exams.
With focused study and hard work, she cleared the exam on her first attempt—a rare achievement, especially without coaching. Her success speaks to her dedication and disciplined approach to achieving her goals.
BREAKING BARRIERS AS BIKANER’S FIRST WOMAN SP
In a profession traditionally dominated by men, Preeti Chandra is a trailblazer. She became the first woman Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, a role that has earned her widespread respect across the state. Known as the “Lady Singham,” her leadership is marked by fearlessness and a commitment to law enforcement, solidifying her reputation as one of Rajasthan’s most dedicated officers.
Before her posting in Bikaner, Preeti served as the Senior Superintendent of Police in Alwar and as SP in Bundi and Karauli. Her work in Karauli, where she pursued notorious criminals in the Chambal ravines, further established her image as an officer unafraid of tackling complex challenges.
COMBATING CRIME AND MAKING AN IMPACT
Throughout her career, Preeti Chandra has confronted numerous social issues head-on. While posted as SP in Bundi, she led a significant operation that dismantled a human trafficking and prostitution ring, arresting multiple suspects and rescuing several young girls. This bold action helped establish her as “Lady Singham,” a title inspired by a popular Bollywood cop character known for bravery and unrelenting dedication to justice.
In Karauli, Preeti and her team went directly after notorious dacoits in the Chambal region, reducing criminal activity and prompting many to surrender. This had a lasting impact on the crime landscape, enhancing public trust in law enforcement.
LEADING WITH INTEGRITY IN THE URBAN SECTOR
Preeti’s work in urban settings has been equally inspiring. As Deputy Commissioner of Police in Jaipur Metro Corporation, she maintained a strict approach to law enforcement.
Her time with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Kota further underscored her commitment to fair and honest governance, making her a respected figure in every community she serves.
AN INSPIRATION FOR ASPIRANTS
Preeti Chandra’s journey resonates with UPSC aspirants and young professionals across India. Her achievement of clearing the exam on her first attempt without coaching, her ability to overcome barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field, and her consistent pursuit of justice have made her a true role model.
