Patna: The Bihar government is set to introduce 14 specially designed low-floor CNG buses in Patna to improve travel convenience for Divyangjans (persons with disabilities) and senior citizens.
After the successful launch of the Pink Bus service for women, the Transport Department is now expanding inclusive mobility with these new accessibility-focused buses.
14 Accessible Buses to Be Introduced in Patna First
The Transport Department has initiated the procurement of 14 low-floor CNG buses at a cost of ₹6.70 crore. These buses will initially be operated in Patna district before being expanded to other parts of the state.
According to officials, the buses have been designed specifically to ensure safe and comfortable travel for persons with disabilities and elderly passengers.
Special Features Designed for Divyangjan-Friendly Travel
The newly introduced buses will include several accessibility features such as:
- Ramp system instead of stairs for easy wheelchair access
- Dedicated space for parking wheelchairs
- Low-height seating arrangement
- Safety handrails for better support
- Audio alert system for passengers
These features aim to make public transport more inclusive and user-friendly.
Major Relief for Over 23 Lakh Divyangjans in Bihar
Bihar has an estimated population of more than 23 lakh Divyangjans. While seats are currently reserved for them in Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) buses, many still face difficulties while boarding and travelling in regular buses.
Officials believe that the introduction of these special buses will significantly improve accessibility and provide dignified and comfortable travel options for Divyang passengers and senior citizens.
Bus Procurement Through GeM Portal, Service to Expand Gradually
The Transport Department has placed the order for these buses through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. The buses are expected to be delivered within four months.
Once delivered, decisions regarding fare structure and routes will be taken. Initially, services will begin in Patna, and later expanded to other districts across Bihar.
Step Towards Inclusive and Accessible Public Transport
This initiative is being seen as a major step toward inclusive mobility in Bihar. The government aims to ensure that public transport is accessible, safe, and respectful for all sections of society, especially Divyangjans and elderly citizens.
