Dehradun: In a major step toward shaping the future of Dehradun, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has approved a comprehensive ₹968 crore development plan aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure, promoting green spaces, and regulating unplanned construction.
The decision was finalized during the 113th board meeting, where the budget for the financial year 2026–27 was approved along with 48 key proposals focused on balanced and sustainable urban growth.
Focus on Planned Urban Expansion
As Dehradun continues to expand rapidly, with increasing population, traffic congestion, and urban sprawl, the new blueprint emphasizes planned and balanced development rather than unchecked expansion.
The meeting, chaired by Garhwal Commissioner and MDDA Chairman Vinay Shankar Pandey, highlighted the urgent need to manage pressure on infrastructure caused by the growth of new colonies and outer city areas.
Strengthening Infrastructure and Public Facilities
The approved proposals aim to:
- Improve urban infrastructure
- Enhance public amenities
- Develop green zones
- Promote tourism investments
- Regulate construction activities
MDDA officials confirmed that most proposals are directly linked to public welfare and will be closely monitored during implementation.
Boost to Investment, Tourism, and Employment
A major highlight of the plan is the approval of projects related to:
- Eco-resorts
- Hotels
- Commercial complexes
- Residential developments
These initiatives are expected to attract private investment and strengthen tourism-driven economic activity. Planned construction in outer areas and along tourist routes will also generate new employment opportunities.
Stricter Building Regulations to Curb Illegal Construction
The board has adopted revised building bylaws aligned with state government notifications. These changes will:
- Simplify map approval processes
- Improve transparency in construction permissions
- Enforce rules on parking, setbacks, and building height
- Strengthen monitoring of illegal constructions
This move is particularly important for areas experiencing rapid, unplanned growth.
Green Strategy to Combat Rising Temperatures
With rising temperatures and shrinking green cover becoming serious concerns, the plan prioritizes:
- Tree plantation drives
- Water conservation efforts
- Development of parks and green belts
Green corridors will be developed along roads, dividers, and public spaces—not just for beautification but also to control urban heat and reduce dust pollution.
Dedicated Machinery for Green Maintenance
To ensure proper upkeep of green spaces, MDDA has approved the purchase of:
- A tractor with a pressure pump
- A hydraulic trolley
This will help maintain plantations, supply water, and manage soil and fertilizers efficiently across the city.
Expected Benefits for Residents
The ₹968 crore plan is expected to deliver multiple long-term benefits:
- Reduced pressure on core city infrastructure
- Organized expansion into peripheral areas
- Increased employment and tourism activity
- Better air quality and reduced heat impact
- Control over illegal construction
- Improved urban aesthetics and livability
Vision: A Balanced and Sustainable Dehradun
According to officials, the goal is not just development but sustainable and well-planned urban growth. The focus remains on strengthening infrastructure while ensuring environmental conservation progresses in parallel.
With timely execution, this ambitious blueprint could significantly improve Dehradun’s urban landscape and prepare it for future challenges.
