New Delhi: A major step towards water conservation was taken in Delhi as a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed under the ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative for implementing a rainwater harvesting project in 75 CM Shri Schools across the national capital.
The MoU was signed at the Delhi Secretariat between Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the Directorate of Education, Delhi Government, and Ehsaas NGO in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The project will be carried out under IGL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and aims to improve rainwater management infrastructure in government schools while creating awareness about water conservation among students and teachers.
Rainwater Harvesting Systems to Be Installed in 75 CM Shri Schools
Under the project, existing rainwater harvesting systems in selected schools will be audited, restored, and made fully functional.
The initiative will include:
- Audit of existing rainwater harvesting structures
- Restoration and improvement of old systems
- Installation of new rooftop rainwater harvesting systems
- Water conservation awareness programmes
- Environmental education activities for students and teachers
The project aims to improve groundwater recharge capacity and encourage sustainable water management practices within school campuses.

CM Rekha Gupta Plans Expansion to 800 Delhi Government Schools
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the initiative will not remain limited to only 75 schools and expressed confidence that the model will gradually be expanded to nearly 800 Delhi government schools.
She said the government’s long-term objective is to ensure that all government schools in Delhi have functional rainwater harvesting systems.
According to the Chief Minister, expanding the initiative across schools will help create a larger impact on groundwater conservation and promote sustainable environmental practices throughout the city.
Government-Industry-NGO Partnership for Water Conservation
CM Rekha Gupta described the project as an example of effective collaboration between:
- Government agencies
- Corporate organizations
- Social sector institutions
She said such partnerships can create meaningful solutions for environmental challenges while ensuring community participation.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative will not only strengthen water conservation efforts but also encourage students to develop responsibility and sensitivity towards natural resources.
Students to Become Ambassadors of Water Conservation
The project places special emphasis on creating environmental awareness among young people.
Through educational programmes and activities, students and teachers will be encouraged to understand:
- Importance of rainwater harvesting
- Groundwater conservation methods
- Sustainable use of water resources
- Role of citizens in protecting the environment
The initiative aims to make schools active centres for promoting water conservation awareness among future generations.
