Details of India Solar Capacity Additions Data
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi stated that India has overtaken the US in annual solar capacity additions and is now setting global benchmarks in renewable energy growth. The achievement reflects strong policy support, infrastructure development, and increasing investment in solar energy.
According to IRENA data, India recorded more than 37 GW of new solar installations in 2025, helping the country move ahead of the United States in annual solar market growth.
Why India’s Solar Sector Is Growing So Fast
Several factors have contributed to India’s rapid solar expansion:
1. Strong Government Policies
Programs such as:
- PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
- Solar Park Development Scheme
- Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme
- Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO)
have accelerated solar deployment across the country.
2. Record Renewable Energy Investments
India has witnessed substantial investments in:
- Utility-scale solar projects
- Rooftop solar systems
- Solar manufacturing
- Grid modernization
These investments have improved project execution and reduced costs.
3. Growing Domestic Manufacturing
The government’s focus on domestic solar module and cell production is reducing dependence on imports while strengthening energy security.
India’s Position in Global Renewable Energy
According to official government data:
| Country | Renewable Energy Capacity (GW) |
| China | 2,258.02 |
| United States | 467.92 |
| India | 250.52 |
| Brazil | 228.20 |
| Germany | 199.92 |
India currently ranks third globally in total renewable energy installed capacity, behind China and the United States. However, in terms of annual solar growth during 2025, India has moved ahead of the US.
Renewable Energy Milestones Achieved by India
India’s renewable energy sector has recorded several major achievements:
- 50% of cumulative installed power capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources.
- India achieved this target nearly five years ahead of its 2030 commitment.
- Renewable energy met 51.5% of electricity demand during a peak period in July 2025.
- Total non-fossil fuel capacity addition reached 55.3 GW in FY 2025-26.
