Chennai: The 14th BRICS Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Ministerial Meeting began in Chennai with an inaugural address by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
Speaking to delegations from BRICS member countries, Singh outlined India’s priorities for international cooperation in science, technology and innovation during its 2026 BRICS Presidency.
India has adopted “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” as the theme of its BRICS Presidency this year.
India Pushes Four Principles for Innovation
Dr. Jitendra Singh said rapid advances in emerging technologies are creating new opportunities while also requiring greater international cooperation.
He advocated innovation that is:
- Accessible
- Affordable
- Trusted
- Sustainable
The Minister highlighted technologies including Artificial Intelligence, quantum technologies, advanced materials, biotechnology, photonics, geospatial technologies and high-performance computing.

India Highlights Key Science and Technology Initiatives
Singh referred to several Indian initiatives as examples of the country’s approach to science and innovation, including:
- National Quantum Mission
- National Supercomputing Mission
- BioE3 Policy
- National Geospatial Policy
- Expanding Digital Public Infrastructure
He said India’s approach seeks to ensure that scientific and technological advances contribute to people’s lives, societal resilience and sustainable economic transformation.
BRICS STI Cooperation Gets Wider Focus
According to the Minister, BRICS STI cooperation has developed into a platform covering several areas, including:
- Research collaboration
- Innovation partnerships
- Young scientist exchanges
- Research infrastructure
- Thematic working groups
India is also undertaking a review of BRICS STI priorities during its presidency to align cooperation with emerging technological areas and developmental priorities.

India Seeks Deeper Collaboration Among BRICS Partners
Dr. Jitendra Singh invited BRICS countries to explore practical areas for expanded cooperation, including:
- Frontier research
- Innovation financing
- Talent mobility
- Research infrastructure sharing
- Startup partnerships
- Capacity building
He said stronger cooperation could support a future-ready BRICS STI framework and address global challenges while supporting the aspirations of the Global South.
The Minister expressed confidence that the Chennai meeting would strengthen cooperation among BRICS countries and contribute to innovation, resilience and sustainability.
