1989 batch IPS officer Vikas Sahay has been appointed as the new DGP of Gujarat. Earlier, after the retirement of DGP Ashish Bhatia, Sahay, who is the Director General of Police (Training), was appointed as the in-charge DG & IGP of the state.
58 year old Mr. Sahay is a native of Bihar and has done his post graduation in History. Sahay has worked in different capacities in Gujarat Police, including as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in Ahmedabad city in 2005 and as the Chairman of Lok Rakshak Recruitment Board (LRRB) over the years later.
Mr Vikas has handled all major responsibilities of United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions including Bosnia-Herzegovina during 1998-99. After this mission, Vikas Sahay has worked on many important posts in Police Department like SP Anand in 1999, SP Ahmedabad Rural in 2001, DCP Zone II and III Ahmedabad City in 2002, DCP Traffic Ahmedabad City in 2004, Additional CP Traffic.
Earlier during Vijay Rupani’s government, he has served as recruitment board chairman, but was sidelined due to a paper leak incident. Now in the government of CM Bhupendra Patel, Mr. Vikas has again come to the fore.
In 2018, when Sahay was the head of LRRB, the examination paper for the recruitment of the Lok Rakshak Dal was leaked. Hours before the exam, Sahay had gone public saying that the paper was leaked and declared the examination cancelled.
The name of Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Sanjay Srivastava was also being discussed as the successor of Ashish Bhatia. But, since he is going to retire in March-2023, there were questions whether the government would make him the DGP for just two months. According to the guidelines of the Supreme Court, the tenure of the DGP should be of six months. In view of this, if Sanjay Srivastava was made DGP, he would have to be given an extension of six months. Due to which Vikas Sahay has been made DGP.
