Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh is moving towards the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announcing that a committee constituted by the state government is actively gathering public feedback and consulting stakeholders across districts before finalising its recommendations.
The Chief Minister said the state government is committed to introducing the Uniform Civil Code and urged citizens to participate in the process by sharing their suggestions through a dedicated online portal launched for the purpose.
Committee Constituted for UCC Implementation
Dr. Mohan Yadav stated that the Madhya Pradesh government has already constituted a committee to examine and prepare recommendations regarding the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state.
According to the Chief Minister, the panel comprises experts and scholars from various fields and is headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. The committee is currently touring different districts to collect opinions and suggestions from members of various religious communities and social groups.
The consultations are aimed at ensuring that diverse viewpoints are considered before the final report is submitted to the government.
Public Participation Invited
The Chief Minister appealed to citizens to actively contribute to the process by sharing their views and suggestions through the dedicated UCC website launched by the state government.
He said public participation is important in shaping legislation that could have implications for personal laws, family matters and other civil issues.
“I appeal to the people of Madhya Pradesh to ensure that they submit their valuable suggestions,” Dr. Yadav said.
‘No Need for Divergent Viewpoints’: CM
Speaking about the rationale behind the proposed legislation, Dr. Mohan Yadav said that in today’s context there is no longer a need for divergent legal frameworks in matters relating to family, divorce and certain social issues.
The Chief Minister asserted that the time has come to move towards a common civil framework.
According to him, whether the issue concerns family traditions, divorce-related matters or other personal legal affairs, the state should work towards uniformity through the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.
“Today, there is no need for divergent viewpoints. The need of the hour is to move towards the Uniform Civil Code,” he said.
Madhya Pradesh Looking at Other States
Dr. Yadav noted that some states have already taken steps towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code and suggested that Madhya Pradesh would follow a similar path.
He said the state government is determined to bring the legislation after considering the recommendations submitted by the expert committee.
Once the committee’s report is received, the government will work towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code at the earliest, he added.
Committee Touring Districts for Feedback
The Chief Minister said the committee is interacting with representatives of different faiths and communities across Madhya Pradesh to gather views on various aspects of the proposed code.
The consultations are expected to cover issues related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption and other civil matters that are generally governed by personal laws.
The feedback collected during these interactions will form part of the committee’s final recommendations to the state government.
Government Keen on Early Implementation
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Dr. Mohan Yadav said Madhya Pradesh is among the states where the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code is considered suitable.
He expressed confidence that the proposed legislation would contribute to legal uniformity and administrative efficiency while aligning with broader governance reforms being pursued under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Chief Minister said the state government intends to move forward with the proposal as soon as the committee completes its work and submits its report.
With consultations underway and public feedback being actively sought, Madhya Pradesh appears set to become one of the next states to move towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code.
