Anurag Dhankar: The Investigator Who Travelled from Kosovo’s Conflict Zones to the Command of Tripura Police

From investigating one of India’s biggest banking frauds to serving in Kosovo and leading Tripura Police, Anurag Dhankar’s career spans intelligence, policing, security, and high-stakes investigations.

When Anurag Dhankar took charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura, it marked the culmination of a journey that had stretched across conflict zones, intelligence corridors, high-profile investigations, and some of India’s most important policing institutions.

For over three decades, Dhankar has remained largely away from the spotlight. Yet, his career tells the story of an officer who quietly moved through some of the most demanding assignments in Indian policing, building a reputation not through headlines but through responsibility.

A CAREER ROOTED IN SERVICE

A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre, Anurag Dhankar entered the police service at a time when India was witnessing rapid social, political, and security changes. Over the years, he would become one of the most experienced officers of his cadre, spending nearly sixteen years serving in different capacities within Tripura.

His understanding of the state’s unique challenges—ranging from law and order concerns to border management and intelligence operations—was shaped through years of ground-level experience.

Those who followed his career saw a pattern emerge. Whether in state policing or central assignments, Dhankar was often entrusted with roles that demanded patience, analysis, and strategic thinking.

FROM TRIPURA TO THE WORLD STAGE

One of the defining chapters of his career came in 2003-04 when he was selected to serve with the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.

The assignment placed him in a region recovering from conflict and rebuilding institutions. Working alongside international officers exposed him to global policing practices, peacekeeping operations, and the complexities of maintaining order in sensitive environments.

For many officers, such assignments become career highlights. For Dhankar, it was one more experience that broadened his understanding of policing beyond borders.

THE INVESTIGATOR BEHIND HIGH-PROFILE CASES

While many officers spend their careers in conventional policing, Dhankar’s journey took a different turn through a long tenure with the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks as Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Joint Director, and eventually Additional Director. The progression reflected the confidence placed in him within India’s premier investigative agency.

His most widely discussed assignment came during the investigation into the Punjab National Bank fraud linked to fugitive businessman Nirav Modi. The case captured national attention and became one of India’s largest financial crime investigations.

Leading such a probe required navigating complex financial trails, coordinating across agencies, and handling intense public scrutiny. It was the kind of investigation that tested every aspect of an officer’s professional capability.

SHAPING INSTITUTIONS BEYOND INVESTIGATIONS

Dhankar’s career was never confined to criminal investigations alone.

At the Central Industrial Security Force, he served as Inspector General (Personnel), overseeing critical human-resource and administrative functions within one of the country’s largest security organizations.

He also worked with the Bureau of Police Research and Development, where the focus shifted from enforcement to reform, modernization, and improving policing systems.

These assignments gave him a broader perspective—one that extended beyond solving crimes to strengthening institutions.

RETURNING HOME TO LEAD

Back in Tripura, Dhankar held one of the state’s most important policing assignments as Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) between 2013 and 2016.

The period coincided with a crucial phase in Tripura’s security landscape, as the state continued consolidating gains against insurgent activities and focused on maintaining stability.

Before his elevation as police chief, he served as Director General of Police (Intelligence), a role that placed him at the center of security assessments and strategic planning.

By the time the state government selected him as Tripura’s DGP, he was already regarded as one of the most experienced officers available for the position.

THE CHALLENGES AHEAD

As Tripura’s police chief, Dhankar now oversees a force confronting a changing security environment.

The state’s long international border with Bangladesh presents constant challenges related to smuggling, trafficking, and illegal crossings. The growing focus on anti-narcotics operations has added another layer of responsibility.

His intelligence background suggests a preference for preventive policing and information-driven decision-making. Combined with his experience in investigations, administration, and police modernization, it gives him a unique vantage point from which to lead.

Today, Anurag Dhankar stands at the helm of Tripura Police after a career that has moved from district policing to international peacekeeping missions, from sensitive intelligence work to some of India’s most closely watched investigations.

In an era where visibility often overshadows substance, his story remains that of a quiet strategist whose influence has been felt across institutions, investigations, and the evolving landscape of Indian policing.
