Patna: The Bihar government has launched the Makhana Development Scheme to boost production, strengthen marketing, and double farmers’ income by promoting large-scale cultivation of makhana (fox nut), also known as “white gold.”
The initiative aims to modernise farming practices and enhance Bihar’s dominance as the largest producer of makhana in India.
Focus on Higher Production and Farmer Income Growth
The scheme is designed to:
- Increase makhana production
- Provide improved seeds and modern farming techniques
- Replace traditional tools with advanced equipment
- Strengthen processing and value addition
- Double farmers’ income through better productivity and pricing
The initiative will especially benefit farmers in regions like Kosi, Mithilanchal, and Seemanchal.
Up to 75% Subsidy for Farmers and Units
Under the scheme, the government is offering significant financial support:
- Per hectare cultivation cost: ₹97,000
- Subsidy: Up to 75% (₹71,600 per hectare)
Subsidy for Processing Units:
- Micro units: ₹5 lakh
- Small units: ₹19.5 lakh
- Medium units: ₹1.5 crore
- Large units: ₹3.5 crore
Additionally, farmers will receive:
- ₹2 lakh assistance for product management units at farm level
Boost to Branding, Marketing and Export
To strengthen market access, the scheme also includes:
- ₹10 lakh support for establishing makhana sales centres
- Up to ₹25 lakh assistance for participation in national and international exhibitions
- ₹2.5 lakh support for export certification
These measures aim to improve branding, expand global reach, and increase export opportunities for Bihar’s makhana industry.

Makhana cultivation is widely practiced in water-rich districts such as:
- Katihar
- Purnia
- Madhubani
- Kishanganj
- Supaul
- Araria
- Madhepura
- Saharsa
- Darbhanga
- Khagaria
These regions form the backbone of Bihar’s makhana production ecosystem.
Eligibility and Application Process
To apply for the scheme, farmers must:
- Be residents of Bihar
- Have Aadhaar card
- Possess a bank account
- Provide land ownership documents
Applications can be submitted through:
- Nearest Common Service Centre (CSC)
- Bihar Agriculture App
- Official portal: horticulture.bihar.gov.in
