Raipur: A significant mineral discovery in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district has raised hopes of a large-scale diamond reserve in the region. During scientific exploration in the Baloda Belmundi Diamond Block in Saraipali area, five diamonds weighing a total of 1.22 carats were recovered from processing 200 tonnes of mineral material.
Experts believe this finding could indicate a much larger diamond-bearing zone in the state, opening new possibilities for investment and employment.
Exploration Conducted by NMDC–CMDC Joint Venture
The discovery has been officially confirmed by NMDC–CMDC Limited, a joint venture between National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation (CMDC).
According to the company, the exploration involved:
- Stream sediment sampling
- Geophysical surveys
- 500-metre exploratory drilling
Based on these studies, a potential diamond-bearing zone was identified, leading to the processing of mineral samples at a diamond processing facility in Panna, Madhya Pradesh.
Five Diamonds Recovered After Processing 200 Tonnes of Material
The processed samples yielded five diamonds, which include:
- Two gem-quality white diamonds (0.19 and 0.06 carat)
- One yellow diamond (0.32 carat)
- Two brown diamonds (0.59 and 0.06 carat)
The diamonds have been securely stored at NMDC’s strong room facility in Panna due to lack of storage arrangements at the project site.
Gem-Quality Diamonds Raise Geological Importance
Experts have highlighted the presence of gem-quality diamonds as a highly positive indicator. Gem-quality stones are used in jewellery due to their clarity, shine, and superior colour, unlike industrial-grade diamonds used in cutting tools.
Even though the quantity is small, geologists say early-stage discoveries like this are crucial for identifying larger mineral deposits in future exploration phases.
Strong Signal for Larger Diamond Deposits in Future
Mining experts believe that finding five diamonds in initial testing strongly suggests the possibility of a larger underground deposit.
They note that:
- Early exploration findings often begin with small recoveries
- The region may require deeper and more extensive surveys
- Commercial mining potential could be evaluated in later stages
This discovery could pave the way for expanded geological investigations in the region.
Boost to Investment, Jobs and Mineral Economy
India is already the world’s largest diamond cutting and polishing hub but relies heavily on imports for raw diamonds. A potential domestic source in Chhattisgarh could significantly reduce import dependence.
If commercially viable mining begins, it could lead to:
- Increased investment in the mineral sector
- Job creation in mining and allied industries
- Higher revenue for the state
- Strengthening of India’s self-reliance in minerals
CM Vishnu Deo Sai Hails Discovery as Major Milestone
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the discovery as an important milestone for the state. He said the find reflects Chhattisgarh’s rich mineral wealth and opens new opportunities for development, investment, and employment.
State Government Review and Future Steps
NMDC–CMDC Limited has sought guidance from the state government for further action regarding the exploration site. Experts suggest that continued studies could potentially position Chhattisgarh among India’s emerging diamond-producing regions.
Promising Start for Chhattisgarh’s Diamond Potential
The discovery of five diamonds in Mahasamund may be small in quantity, but it holds significant geological and economic importance. With further exploration, the region could emerge as a key contributor to India’s domestic diamond production in the coming years.
