New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday (May 31) chaired a high-level virtual review meeting on the capital’s water supply situation, focusing on improving distribution, addressing shortages, and ensuring uninterrupted drinking water supply during the peak summer season.

During the review, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that no area in Delhi faces a water crisis amid rising temperatures. She emphasized that public complaints must be resolved quickly and water distribution systems should be strengthened to meet increased summer demand.

Assurance of Water Supply from Haryana
The Chief Minister said the Delhi government is working “on a war footing” to ensure adequate drinking water supply to every resident.
She informed that due to reduced water availability near the Wazirabad stretch of the Yamuna, she held talks with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Following this, Haryana assured a minimum supply of 1,000 cusecs of water to Delhi through the Munak Canal.
Large-Scale Water Distribution Through Tankers
Officials informed the Chief Minister that over 980 water tankers are operating across Delhi, completing more than 6,000 trips daily to supply water to densely populated and narrow-lane areas.
Additional small tankers have also been deployed to ensure water reaches hard-to-access localities.
Increased Groundwater Production and Helpline Response
The Delhi Jal Board has increased water production by around 10.5 MGD by installing additional borewells in the Yamuna Khadar area.
The Chief Minister was also informed that out of 11,055 complaints received on the DJB helpline in the past week, more than 8,500 have already been resolved. She directed officials to clear remaining complaints on priority.
Strict Action Against Leakage and Waste of Water
CM Rekha Gupta instructed officials to treat every case of water leakage seriously and take immediate corrective action. She emphasized that water conservation is critical and wastage of every drop must be prevented.
She also directed officials to personally monitor complaints and conduct field inspections whenever necessary.
Long-Term Water Management Strategy
The Chief Minister stressed the need for both immediate and long-term solutions to ensure Delhi’s water security. She said feasibility studies are being conducted for pipeline-based water supply from Haryana, with IIT Roorkee evaluating technical aspects.
Other long-term measures include:
- Dredging and desilting of the Yamuna near Wazirabad
- Setting up new water treatment plants
- Expanding borewell infrastructure in Yamuna floodplain areas
- Implementing a dual water supply system for reuse of treated water
Rainwater Harvesting and Water Conservation Drive
The Chief Minister also highlighted plans to strengthen water conservation efforts. She said rainwater harvesting structures are being developed in 75 CM Shri Schools.
Additionally, the government plans to construct 500 new rainwater harvesting systems and restore 1,000 existing ones. A tender process for these projects has already been initiated.
She also stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to promote responsible water usage across the city.
The Delhi government, under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is actively working on both immediate relief measures and long-term strategies to address the city’s water crisis. The administration aims to ensure uninterrupted water supply while strengthening conservation and infrastructure for future demand.
