New Delhi: Rekha Gupta on Thursday flagged off the ‘Somnath Swabhiman Parv – Somnath Yatra’, sending more than 1,400 devotees from the national capital to the historic Somnath Temple in Gujarat. The special initiative aims to promote cultural heritage and spiritual tourism.
The event was also attended by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, marking the ceremonial departure of a specially arranged train carrying pilgrims.
Special Train Launched for Free Pilgrimage to Somnath
A dedicated train was flagged off to transport devotees, which is expected to reach Somnath the following morning. The pilgrims will stay from May 1 to May 3, during which they will participate in temple darshan and visit nearby religious sites.
The entire pilgrimage has been organized free of cost, with arrangements for:
- Accommodation
- Food
- Drinking water
- Travel assistance
These facilities have been coordinated with support from the government of Gujarat.

Cultural and Spiritual Significance of the Yatra
Addressing the gathering, CM Rekha Gupta said the journey represents the 1,000-year-old spiritual and historical legacy of Somnath Temple. She described the initiative as a matter of pride and emphasized its role in reconnecting people with India’s cultural roots.
She said the large-scale participation of devotees reflects the importance of preserving and celebrating India’s religious heritage and traditions.
Government Focus on Cultural Tourism
Officials stated that the “Somnath Swabhiman Yatra” is designed to:
- Connect citizens with their cultural and spiritual roots
- Promote awareness of India’s ancient heritage
- Strengthen religious tourism initiatives
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra said extensive arrangements have been made to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for all passengers.

Participants praised the arrangements and described the journey as a memorable experience. Many devotees appreciated the facilities provided onboard and the overall organization of the trip.
One pilgrim described the arrangements as the “best ever experienced,” while another highlighted the initiative as a strong step toward promoting Indian culture.
Symbol of Faith and Cultural Revival
The initiative was earlier announced on April 28 by the Chief Minister, who dedicated it to the “1,000 years of unwavering faith” associated with Somnath.
Officials reiterated that the journey is not just a pilgrimage but also a symbol of India’s cultural revival and spiritual unity, bringing together faith and tradition on a large scale.
