New Delhi: Rekha Gupta has announced that the Delhi government will develop 13 new gaushalas (cow shelters) across the capital based on a modern ‘Zero Waste Model’, aimed at improving cow protection, sustainability, and environmental management.
The initiative focuses on integrating biogas plants, veterinary hospitals, solar energy systems, and advanced sanitation facilities within each gaushala.
District-Wise Gaushalas with Modern Infrastructure
The Chief Minister stated that at least one modern gaushala will be established in every district of Delhi. Suitable land parcels have already been identified for the project.
She emphasized that the goal is to ensure:
- Adequate space for cattle
- Clean and hygienic environment
- Better healthcare facilities
- Natural and stress-free living conditions for cows
Currently, several existing gaushalas are overcrowded, which affects animal health and care standards.
Biogas Plants to Convert Waste into Energy
A key highlight of the plan is the installation of biogas plants to scientifically manage cow dung and convert it into clean energy.
According to the government plan:
- Six new biogas plants will be set up within the next two years
- Cow dung will be used for renewable energy production
- Waste management systems will be made more efficient
This is expected to reduce pollution while promoting clean energy generation in the capital.
Integration with Green and Open Spaces
The government is also planning to connect gaushalas with Delhi’s ridge and forest areas, allowing cattle access to open and natural environments.
This step aims to:
- Improve animal health and mobility
- Encourage natural grazing environments
- Promote eco-friendly livestock management
₹100 Crore Approved for Dairy Colony Redevelopment
The Delhi government has approved ₹100 crore for the redevelopment and improvement of dairy colonies.
The funds will be used to:
- Upgrade basic infrastructure
- Improve sanitation and drainage systems
- Enhance living and working conditions in dairy clusters
Continued Support for Existing Gaushalas
Until new facilities are completed, the government will continue strengthening existing gaushalas by ensuring:
- Veterinary staff availability
- Adequate medical supplies
- Regular maintenance and utility support
The Chief Minister assured that no gaps will be left in cattle care during the transition phase.
Commitment to Sustainable Cow Protection Model
The announcement was made during an event at a gaushala operated by the Delhi Pinjrapole Society in Kishanganj, where the Chief Minister also participated in religious ceremonies and interacted with cattle.
She stated that the government is committed to transforming Delhi’s gaushalas into modern, self-sustaining, and environmentally responsible institutions, aligning animal welfare with sustainability goals.
