Amid growing public attention over the death of former model Twisha Sharma, Kailash Makwana on Tuesday said the Madhya Pradesh Police had itself recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case following a request from the victim’s family.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, the DGP asserted that the state police had followed all established procedures during the investigation.
CBI RE-REGISTERS FIR
The CBI on Monday re-registered an FIR against Twisha’s husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, and her mother-in-law, former judge Giribala Singh.
The agency invoked sections related to dowry death, cruelty by husband or relatives, and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
Twisha Sharma was found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12.
While her family has accused the in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, the accused family has claimed she was struggling with drug addiction.
DGP DEFENDS POLICE ACTION
Responding to questions over the handling of the investigation, Makwana said the state police acted transparently and in accordance with legal procedures.
“Since the family requested it, we ourselves recommended and handed over the case to the CBI for investigation,” he said.
The DGP’s remarks come amid continued public scrutiny surrounding the high-profile case.
MP POLICE RECRUITMENT DRIVE
Makwana also highlighted broader policing issues during his visit to Indore, including the challenge of manpower shortages ahead of the Simhastha fair scheduled in Ujjain in 2028.
He said recruitment for 8,500 police posts was conducted last year, while permission has been sought from the state government for recruitment to another 10,500 posts this year.
The DGP was attending the passing-out parade of 617 newly trained constables at the Rustomji Armed Police Training College in Indore.
