Raipur: Ramen Deka said that nearly 80 percent of Chhattisgarh’s economy is dependent on agriculture and stressed the need to increase production through modern and value-added farming practices. He was addressing the 11th convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya held in Raipur.
The grand convocation ceremony was attended by Vishnu Deo Sai as the chief guest, while Ramvichar Netam and noted agricultural scientist Ashok Kumar Singh were present as special guests.
Degrees and Medals Awarded to Students
During the convocation ceremony, degrees and medals were awarded to students who passed in the academic session 2024-25.
A total of:
- 13 Gold Medals
- 7 Silver Medals
- 2 Bronze Medals
were awarded to meritorious students across various faculties.
Additionally:
- 128 students received PhD degrees
- 518 students received postgraduate degrees
- 1,234 students received undergraduate degrees
Governor Ramen Deka Emphasizes Modern Agriculture
Addressing students, Governor Ramen Deka said that the convocation ceremony is not just a day for receiving degrees but also marks the beginning of a new future.
He highlighted that agriculture is rapidly transforming through science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. Technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, satellite mapping, precision farming, climate-resilient techniques, biotechnology and data analytics are increasingly shaping global agriculture.
The Governor noted that India is also moving rapidly in this direction with the use of:
- Drone-based fertilizer and pesticide spraying
- Digital soil health monitoring
- Mobile app-based farmer advisory systems
- e-NAM digital marketplaces
He encouraged farmers and youth to adopt modern farming methods and focus on high-quality rice production, including Basmati varieties, to improve market opportunities and farmer income.
Focus on Hydroponics and Natural Farming
The Governor said Chhattisgarh, known as the “Rice Bowl of India,” has immense potential for advanced agriculture, including hydroponics and natural farming.
He added that the state’s land and water structure are highly suitable for agriculture as water retention supports higher productivity. With the right technology and mindset, farming in the state can become more profitable and sustainable.
CM Vishnu Deo Sai Highlights Farmer Welfare Initiatives
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai praised the university for its contribution to agricultural education and research. He said that new crop varieties and modern technologies developed by scientists are helping farmers significantly.
The Chief Minister stated that the state government is continuously working to make farming modern, profitable and sustainable. Along with paddy cultivation, the government is promoting:
- Pulses
- Oilseeds
- Fruits and vegetables
- Millets and coarse grains
He highlighted key farmer welfare initiatives including:
- Paddy procurement at ₹3,100 per quintal
- Expansion of irrigation projects
- Availability of agricultural equipment
- Free electricity schemes for farmers
Sai also urged students to connect AI, drones and digital technologies with agriculture and act as a bridge between farmers and scientists.
Agriculture Minister Calls for Research and Innovation
Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam said Chhattisgarh has the highest diversity of paddy varieties and is widely known for aromatic rice production.
He emphasized the state’s strong potential in fruit, flower and spice cultivation and encouraged students to contribute through research and innovation in agriculture.
Vice Chancellor Presents University Achievements
The convocation address was delivered by renowned scientist Ashok Kumar Singh.
Vice Chancellor Girish Chandel presented the university’s annual report and highlighted its major achievements, research activities and academic progress. He also delivered the convocation message to graduating students.
The ceremony was attended by legislators, vice chancellors of various universities, professors, scientists, university officials, students and their family members.
