Indian Masterminds Stories

Aditya Kumar’s journey from a small village in Rajasthan to becoming an IPS officer is a story of grit, lessons learned through failure, and unwavering focus. Fourteen years ago, a young Aditya, hailing from Ajitpura in Hanumangarh district, set his sights on a government job. With big dreams but limited resources, he pursued this goal with an intensity that never wavered, despite facing setbacks most people would find disheartening.

THE BEGINNING OF A GRUELING ROAD

Fresh out of high school, Aditya started his pursuit of government service with a fire to succeed. But his first attempt at a competitive exam failed. This was just the beginning of a gruelling cycle of letdowns. Over the years, he took 33 exams—spanning various fields including engineering, school administration, and banking. Each failure brought fresh disappointment, but it also sharpened his focus.

One exam after another, Aditya fell short of his dream. Friends and family advised him to try something different or to settle for less. The repeated setbacks could have convinced anyone to give up, but not Aditya. Instead, each attempt only fuelled his drive to keep going. He realised that if he wanted to secure his dream job, he had to aim higher, so he set his sights on the ultimate challenge—the UPSC Civil Services Exam.

A NEW PHASE OF DETERMINATION

In 2013, Aditya made a significant decision: he left his village and moved to Delhi to fully dedicate himself to cracking the UPSC exam. His days in Delhi were filled with intense study, sleepless nights, and self-reflection. Living in a bustling city far from home brought its own set of challenges, but Aditya was committed.

While his peers encouraged him, he faced a fair share of skeptics as well. People questioned his decision, doubting his chances of clearing one of the toughest exams in the country when he had already faced failures in simpler ones. Aditya often heard remarks about his persistence and “unrealistic” ambition, but he ignored the doubts swirling around him and focused on his studies. Even as he pressed forward, he would face further setbacks in the form of three unsuccessful UPSC attempts.

THE HARD LESSONS OF FAILURE

Aditya’s first UPSC attempt in 2014 ended at the prelims stage. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but it also taught him that he needed a stronger preparation strategy. He went back to the drawing board, adjusted his study methods, and appeared again in 2015. This time, he cleared the prelims and mains, but his journey was cut short at the interview stage. Overconfidence, he realised, had played a role in his failure.

Determined not to let this happen again, he refined his approach for his third attempt in 2016. But fate had other plans, and he fell short once again. The repeated setbacks weighed heavily on him, and he wondered if he would ever achieve his goal. Despite the challenges, however, he never stopped believing in himself. Rather than seeing each failure as a roadblock, he treated them as stepping stones, using each setback to better understand his weaknesses and address them.

BREAKTHROUGH IN 2017

Finally, in 2017, Aditya’s persistence paid off. After years of struggle, sleepless nights, and countless revisions, he cleared the UPSC exam. He didn’t just clear it; he secured a spot in the highly respected IPS (Indian Police Service) cadre, achieving an All-India rank of 630 in the 2018 results. Aditya’s success was not just a personal victory but an affirmation that hard work and patience truly make a difference.

His achievement didn’t go unnoticed back home. People who had once doubted his dreams now looked at him with respect and admiration. Aditya proved that no matter how tough the road might seem, it is possible to achieve one’s dreams if one is willing to persevere.

LESSONS FROM ADITYA’S JOURNEY

Aditya Kumar’s story resonates with anyone who has faced setbacks. It’s a reminder that dreams are not always achieved on the first try. Often, they require countless failures, endless learning, and the courage to rise above self-doubt and criticism.

Today, Aditya serves as DCP, Headquarters, Jalandhar. His story is more than just an example of career success; it’s a beacon of hope for anyone who feels discouraged by failure. He often shares his story with young aspirants, emphasising that every failure has something to teach and that true success lies in perseverance.

In a world where failure can feel like the end, Aditya Kumar shows that it can be just the beginning. His journey from Ajitpura to the corridors of power stands as a symbol of what one can achieve when one refuses to let setbacks define them.
