At the heart of Jalgaon’s economy lies agriculture, particularly its prolific banana production. Known for its high productivity, the district is striving to expand its global reach, targeting European and American markets. However, this expansion hinges on addressing critical challenges: reducing pesticide residue to meet stringent international standards, establishing ripening chambers, and stabilising banana output throughout the year. To tackle these issues, DC Ayush Prasad outlined the focus on policy support, encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable practices, and creating farmer producer organisations (FPOs) to strengthen their collective bargaining power.
Cotton, another major crop, presents its own set of challenges. Jalgaon’s cotton yield lags behind national and global averages, necessitating a focus on increasing irrigation coverage and promoting modern agricultural techniques. The completion of eight major irrigation projects and the construction of 2,000 farm ponds, personally overseen by DC Prasad, are expected to significantly boost cotton productivity and expand the net cropped area. Furthermore, the district is reviving its legacy as a hub for food processing, particularly in pulses and edible oils, by encouraging intercropping and supporting local mills.
Beyond agriculture, Jalgaon is tapping into its industrial potential. The district boasts a robust plastic recycling industry, with 400 units employing thousands. Efforts are underway, with the DC actively pushing for, reducing GST on recycled plastic and providing effluent treatment facilities to support this sector. Similarly, the availability of industrial scrap raw material from the Bhusawal railway yard is being leveraged to create a steel material recovery facility, fostering the growth of spare parts manufacturing for railways and automobiles. The presence of an ordinance factory also presents an opportunity to expand defence production.
Jalgaon’s commitment to sustainable development, as emphasised by IAS officer Ayush Prasad, is evident in its focus on renewable energy. The district is significantly increasing its electricity production through thermal and solar power plants, ensuring a reliable power supply for industries and agriculture. With its strategic location, excellent connectivity, and abundant resources, Jalgaon is poised to attract investment and create employment opportunities.
Jalgaon’s ambitious plan is not just about numbers; it’s about transforming the lives of its people and creating a prosperous future for the district, under the dynamic leadership of IAS officer Ayush Prasad.
