Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has announced a major push for the development of the historic Ramgarh region in Chhattisgarh, with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai declaring a ₹1 crore grant during the closing ceremony of the two-day ‘Ramgarh Mahotsav-2026’ held in Surguja on June 30.
The announcement was made as part of the festival’s concluding events, where the Chief Minister also visited the ancient and culturally significant Sita Bengra site for the first time.
Chief Minister’s First Visit to Sita Bengra
During his address, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed his admiration for the heritage site and the cultural importance of the region.
He said,
“It is a great privilege to attend the closing ceremony of the 2-day Ramgarh Festival 2026 and to visit the historic Sita Bengra site for the very first time. I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to all residents of the region on this occasion.”
He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to structured heritage development, stating:
“Today, we have announced a grant of Rs 1 crore; we have also stated that we will develop this area through proper planning.”
Ramgarh: A Heritage Site of Archaeological Importance
Ramgarh, located within the Udaipur Development Block, holds immense significance for tourism, culture, and archaeology.
As per the Divisional Commissioner Surguja’s official records, the Ramgarh Mahotsav has been organized annually since 1973 by the District Archaeological Association in collaboration with the District Administration of Surguja. The festival is traditionally held on the first day of Ashadh.
Ancient Legacy and Cultural Significance
Ramgarh is home to several historically important sites, making it a key destination for researchers and heritage enthusiasts. These include:
- The ancient theatre complex
- Jogimara caves
- Sita Bengra
- Ram Janaki Temple
- The site associated with poet Kalidasa, believed to be where he composed Meghadutam
