Kolkata: Kolkata is set to become the 18th city in India to get a Water Metro service, following policy approval from the Union Ministry of Shipping. The announcement was made after a high-level meeting, marking a major step toward enhancing eco-friendly urban transport in the city.
The project follows Kochi, which became the 17th city to implement the Water Metro system.
Eco-Friendly Transport Link Across Hooghly River
The upcoming Water Metro system will provide a fast, sustainable, and alternative mode of public transport across the Hooghly River.
Officials said the service is aimed at:
- Reducing traffic congestion in Kolkata
- Promoting green and clean transport
- Improving inter-ghat connectivity
- Enhancing daily commuter convenience
The project is expected to significantly transform river-based transport in the city.

Major Ghat Renovation and Beautification Works Underway
Alongside the Water Metro project, large-scale renovation and beautification work is also being carried out along the Ganga ghats in Kolkata.
The redevelopment plan includes modernization of key ghats such as:
- Bagbazar Ghat
- Ahiritola Ghat
- Shovabazar Ghat
- Mallikghat
- Babughat
- Ramkrishnapur Ghat
- Bandhaghat
Authorities confirmed that several of these ghats are nearing completion, while remaining work is targeted for completion ahead of Durga Puja.
Focus on Heritage Preservation and Cultural Identity
Officials emphasized that the development projects are not limited to infrastructure upgrades alone. Special attention is being given to preserving Kolkata’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
The initiative aims to protect and promote landmarks associated with:
- Sri Ramakrishna
- Maa Sarada
- Bengal’s historical and cultural legacy
The approach combines modern urban development with heritage conservation.
Timely Completion Ahead of Durga Puja
Authorities have set a deadline to complete major ghat redevelopment work before Durga Puja, one of Bengal’s most important festivals. The move is expected to enhance both tourism appeal and public convenience during the festive season.
