Lucknow: Even as the Uttar Pradesh government recently confirmed Rajeev Krishna as the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), a much-awaited reshuffle of senior IPS officers is still pending. Several crucial positions at the levels of Director General (DG), Additional Director General (ADG), Inspector General (IG) and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) remain vacant, while discussions are underway regarding appointments to these key posts.
Sources indicate that the delay in issuing the transfer list is linked to ongoing administrative consultations and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s review of the state’s law and order situation. Senior police officers, including police commissioners, range heads and district police chiefs, may face transfers in the coming days as the government prepares a comprehensive reshuffle.
DG Vigilance Post Falls Vacant After DGP Appointment
The appointment of Rajeev Krishna as permanent DGP has created a vacancy in the Vigilance Department.
When the state government issued the order confirming Rajeev Krishna as DGP on May 31, it did not mention the additional charge of Director General, Vigilance, which he had been holding earlier. As a result, the DG Vigilance post is now technically vacant and is among the key positions awaiting a fresh appointment.
The vacancy has triggered speculation within police circles regarding the officer likely to be entrusted with the important anti-corruption and vigilance responsibilities.
Renuka Mishra Emerging as a Strong Contender
According to sources, senior IPS officer Renuka Mishra, a 1990-batch officer and currently the senior-most IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh, is being considered for a significant posting in the upcoming reshuffle.
There is speculation that she may be adjusted either as DG Vigilance or DG Rules & Manual, both of which are currently under discussion at the government level.
Renuka Mishra was among the officers whose names were considered during the process of selecting the new DGP. However, her prospects reportedly suffered due to the controversy surrounding the constable recruitment examination paper leak case.
In its report submitted to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Uttar Pradesh government reportedly mentioned that a blacklisted company had been awarded the examination paper printing contract during her tenure as chairperson of the police recruitment board. Following the controversy, she was attached to the DGP Headquarters.
Despite the setback, she remains one of the most senior officers in the state cadre and is expected to receive an important assignment in the upcoming reshuffle.
DG Rules & Manual Post Also Under Consideration
Another significant vacancy has emerged following the retirement of Antony Dev Kumar on May 31.
Antony Dev Kumar, who had been promoted from ADG to DG rank in March 2026, was serving as Director General, Rules & Manual. Since he was nearing retirement, he was not assigned a major field posting and continued in the administrative role until superannuation.
With his retirement, the government must now decide who will take charge of the Rules & Manual wing, which oversees police regulations, administrative procedures and policy-related matters.
Several Senior IPS Posts Await Fresh Appointments
The pending transfer exercise is not limited to one or two vacancies. Several important field and supervisory positions across Uttar Pradesh currently await appointments.
ADG Gorakhpur Zone
Following Antony Dev Kumar’s retirement and subsequent elevation of Mutha Ashok Jain as DG, the post of ADG, Gorakhpur Zone has become vacant.
Given the strategic importance of eastern Uttar Pradesh, the government is expected to fill the position soon.
IG Mirzapur Range
Another key vacancy has arisen in Mirzapur Range, where IG Rakesh Prakash Singh, a 2007-batch IPS officer, retired on May 31 after serving in the range for nearly four years.
The post remains vacant and is expected to be filled in the forthcoming transfer list.
STF and Devipatan Range
The state’s anti-organised crime operations and range-level supervision have also been affected by recent deputations.
- DIG STF Ghule Sushil Chandrabhan has proceeded on central deputation to Delhi as Deputy Director in the Intelligence Bureau.
- IG Devipatan Range Amit Pathak has joined the National Security Guard (NSG) on central deputation.
Consequently, both positions are awaiting new incumbents.
Law and Order Review Delaying Transfer List
Sources in the administration indicate that the delay in releasing the IPS transfer list is also linked to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s review of recent law and order developments across the state.
The Chief Minister has reportedly sought detailed assessments of crime control, policing performance and administrative responsiveness in several districts and commissionerates.
Based on these reviews, changes are likely in at least two commissionerates and two district police units in the next round of transfers.
Commissionerates Under Government Watch
Several commissionerates are reportedly under scrutiny due to recent incidents that have attracted government attention.
Lucknow, Ghaziabad, Varanasi and Gautam Buddh Nagar
According to sources, these commissionerates have witnessed major criminal incidents in recent weeks, prompting a review of policing and supervisory arrangements.
The government is assessing whether administrative changes are required to improve law and order management.
Kanpur Commissionerate
Kanpur Commissionerate has also come under focus following an unusual incident involving personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), who reportedly laid siege to the office of the Police Commissioner.
The episode has drawn attention at the highest levels and is being considered during the ongoing review process.
Saharanpur Range Also Under Scanner
Apart from commissionerates, the performance of the police leadership in Saharanpur Range is also being evaluated.
Sources indicate that the government is dissatisfied with certain aspects of the functioning of the range and may consider administrative changes in the coming transfer order.
District SSPs May Also Face Transfers
The review is not restricted to senior supervisory officers. Several district police chiefs are also believed to be under scrutiny.
Among the districts reportedly under focus are:
- Pilibhit
- Bagpat
- Jaunpur
- Ghazipur
Sources suggest that dissatisfaction over crime control and law-and-order management in these districts may lead to transfers of the respective Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs).
Major Reshuffle Expected Soon
With multiple DG, ADG, IG and DIG-level vacancies pending and the Chief Minister personally reviewing policing performance across the state, officials expect the long-awaited IPS reshuffle to be announced soon.
The upcoming transfer order is likely to fill several key vacancies, redefine leadership in important police formations and potentially bring changes in commissionerates and districts where the government believes stronger administrative intervention is required.
The reshuffle is expected to be one of the most significant senior-level police administrative exercises undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh government this year.
