When the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 results were declared, celebrations erupted across Jammu and Kashmir. At the top of the list from the Union Territory stood Suvan Sharma, who secured an impressive All India Rank 148 and emerged as the Jammu topper.
But what makes Suvan’s story stand apart is not just the rank.
It is the story of a young engineer who spent years navigating uncertainty, family expectations, repeated attempts, a demanding job, and the mental burden of “what if”, only to finally rise higher than ever before.
And in a twist that sounds straight out of a movie script, Suvan received news of his biggest achievement while preparations for his wedding rituals were underway at home.
“Just as the puja was about to begin, the result came out. Everyone at home was already happy because of the celebrations, and this made the moment even more special. I feel truly blessed,” he shared in an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds.
For Jammu’s aspirants, Suvan Sharma is now more than a rank-holder; he is proof that growth can come slowly, steadily, and at the right moment.
AN ENGINEER WITH A CIVIL SERVICES DREAM
Suvan Sharma’s academic journey began in Jammu, where he pursued engineering from GCET Jammu in 2016.
Even after completing engineering, his interest in society, governance and public systems remained strong. To deepen his understanding, he pursued a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Jammu through distance learning.
His family also played a major role in shaping his aspirations.
Both his parents served in government. His father was a doctor, while his mother worked in administration. Watching governance from close quarters sparked something within him.
“The thought of civil services first came to me during college. Conversations with friends and family shaped it further, and my mother’s career in administration had a strong influence on me,” he stated.
That seed planted in college gradually turned into a mission.
SIX ATTEMPTS, ONE BIGGER DREAM
For many aspirants, one or two failed attempts can feel crushing.
Suvan stayed in the race for six!
This was his sixth attempt at UPSC CSE. And this was not his first taste of success. In the UPSC CSE 2023 examination, he had already secured AIR 412, earning a place in the services. He is currently serving in the Indian Railways.
For many, that would have been the destination. For Suvan, it became a stepping stone. He went back to the drawing board, reassessed his weaknesses, and prepared again… this time with sharper focus.
That decision changed everything.
THE SHIFT THAT CHANGED HIS RANK
Suvan made some crucial changes in his preparation that significantly improved his performance. He focused heavily on answer-writing practice and worked on presenting his responses in a more exam-oriented and structured format. Alongside this, he enriched his answers with relevant current affairs and value-added content.
Most importantly, he began concentrating on what could fetch better marks rather than simply writing everything he knew. These changes made his preparation more precise, practical, and effective.
WHY HE CHOSE SOCIOLOGY AS OPTIONAL
Suvan chose Sociology as his optional subject for two key reasons: overlap and interest.
The subject aligned well with General Studies papers and also matched his analytical thinking.
“Sociology had significant overlap with the General Studies papers, and I was genuinely interested in the analytical side of the subject,” he told Indian Masterminds.
His academic background in the subject through his master’s degree gave him added confidence.
THE “WHAT IF” BATTLE
Behind every UPSC rank is an unseen mental struggle. Suvan faced his own.
After engineering, he got placed, but chose not to join. Watching peers move ahead in their careers while he prepared for UPSC brought pressure.
The constant question haunted him:
What if this doesn’t work?
“The biggest mental challenge is always the ‘what if’. After repeated failures, it is natural to wonder what lies ahead,” he shared.
The pressure grew when he started working in 2018 and had to balance job responsibilities with preparation.
Yet he kept moving.
BALANCING A GOVERNMENT JOB AND UPSC PREPARATION
Preparing for UPSC while working full-time is one of the hardest combinations.
Suvan managed both.
Since 2018, he has been balancing professional commitments alongside his preparation. It wasn’t easy, but it was manageable with discipline and smart planning.
Being under training in the Indian Railway Traffic Service while preparing for UPSC gave Suvan a sense of stability and eased some of the uncertainty that many aspirants face. With a secure career path already in place, he was able to stay calmer, more focused, and approach the examination with a balanced mindset.
His journey shows that aspirants do not always need to isolate themselves from work or life to crack UPSC.
A COMFORTABLE INTERVIEW FOCUSED ON JAMMU & KASHMIR
Unlike many UPSC candidates who face unexpected questions in the personality test, Suvan’s interview was calm and conversational.
Interestingly, despite already being in railway services, the board did not ask much about railways.
The discussion mainly revolved around:
- Jammu & Kashmir
- His Detailed Application Form (DAF)
- His hobbies
That relaxed atmosphere helped him perform naturally.
THE RESULT CAME DURING WEDDING CELEBRATIONS
Success often arrives when least expected. For Suvan, the UPSC result came just as wedding-related ceremonies were beginning at home.
There was a satsang and puja about to begin. His attention was already divided between family celebrations and the occasion.
Then came the result. AIR 148. Jammu topper. The joy multiplied instantly.
What was already a special family occasion turned unforgettable.
HIS MESSAGE TO ASPIRANTS
After years of experience, success, failures, and improvement, Suvan’s advice is clear and practical.
“Consistency is the key.”
He believes aspirants should:
- Stay consistent every day
- Reduce distractions
- Focus on the end goal
- Find their own subjective strategy
- Avoid unrealistic pressure
And perhaps most importantly, have a Plan B.
“You should be dedicated, but not to the point where you abandon everything else. There are many other good career paths as well,” Suvan told Indian Masterminds.
This advice stands out because it is honest. He encourages ambition, but not blind obsession.
JAMMU’S NEW FACE OF UPSC SUCCESS
From an engineering graduate in Jammu to a sociology student, from repeated attempts to AIR 412, from railway services to AIR 148, Suvan Sharma has scripted one of Jammu’s most inspiring UPSC stories this year.
His journey is not about overnight success.
It is about course correction.
It is about learning from every attempt.
It is about staying in the race long enough to improve.
And now, as the highest-ranked candidate from Jammu in UPSC CSE 2025, Suvan Sharma has given thousands of aspirants from the region a new story to believe in.
