A special write up by Poonam Negi
Fitness is a virtue everyone wants to have. But does having a strong body guarantee a healthy, successful, and meaningful life? Does a good physique eliminate stress, anxiety, and depression?
The bitter truth of our times is that almost everyone today is living under some kind of pressure—career stress, relationship issues, loneliness, social media comparisons, job insecurity, and fear of the future. Many people who appear cheerful on the outside are actually broken within. One of the most effective solutions to these problems is Yoga—a holistic way of life developed by the sages of Vedic India.

The Art of Living Life in the Best Possible Way
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna, revered as Yogeshwara (the Lord of Yoga), says: “Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam” meaning yoga is the art of living life in the best possible manner.
Yoga is not confined merely to breathing exercises and physical postures that make the body flexible. It also frees individuals from anxiety and guides them towards self-reflection. Yoga can take you where mere physical strength cannot.
Swami Vivekananda once said, “Concentration is the secret of knowledge.” Yoga enhances concentration. When the mind is calm, decisions become better, goals appear clearer, and the chances of success increase significantly.
The Sanskrit word Yoga literally means “union”—the union of the individual soul with the Supreme Soul. The divine wisdom of yoga that Lord Krishna imparted to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita finds profound expression in the forms of Karma Yoga (the path of action), Bhakti Yoga (the path of devotion), and Jnana Yoga (the path of knowledge). This is India’s priceless gift to humanity that has shown the world the path to healthy living.
Another important verse from the Gita states: “Samatvam Yoga Uchyate”—Yoga is the state of maintaining balance in happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, success and failure. For today’s youth, there can perhaps be no greater mantra for life.
Spirit of May All Be Happy
India has always upheld the philosophy of “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah”—May all be happy, may all be free from illness—and yoga strengthens this vision of life.
According to the ancient Vedic sages, yoga is a scientific method of bringing the body, mind, and soul into harmony. It reduces mental stress, keeps the body healthy, and provides inner peace. Regular practice of yoga makes a person more disciplined, focused, and positive.
India’s yoga tradition is thousands of years old. Ancient sages attained meditation, enlightenment, and self-realization through yoga. Sage Patanjali systematized the science of yoga through his Yoga Sutras. Defining yoga, he wrote: “Yogash Chitta Vritti Nirodhah”—Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind.
Mind, Soul & Body Strengthened
It must be understood that gym workouts strengthen only the body, whereas India’s ancient yogic tradition empowers not just the body but also the mind and soul.
In a gym, one mainly burns calories; yoga, on the other hand, not only strengthens physical health but also burns stress and negativity. Today, many people spend hours in gyms but are unable to sit peacefully for even five minutes to meditate or practice pranayama. The result is evident—bodies may appear fit, but minds remain restless.
At a time when mobile screens distract our minds every second, Patanjali’s teachings are more relevant than ever before. Mental health has emerged as one of the world’s biggest challenges. People are increasingly focused on sculpting their bodies while moving away from the art of strengthening their minds.
Many forget that life’s greatest battles are won not through muscular strength but through mental resilience.
The Global Rise of India’s Yogic Science
It is heartening that over the past decade, India’s ancient practice of yoga has gained immense popularity across the world—not merely as a form of exercise, but as a unique science of balanced living.
Today, yoga has achieved unprecedented global recognition as one of the most effective means of promoting physical and mental well-being. Numerous actors, politicians, and corporate leaders across the world regard meditation and yoga as the foundation of their success, because leadership is shaped not only by physical energy but also by mental clarity and balance.
Many celebrities admired by today’s youth consider yoga the secret behind their success. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has been promoting yoga for years. Internationally, Jennifer Aniston and several Hollywood stars also regard yoga as the key to a stress-free life.
India’s Greatest Soft Power
Today, the world spends billions of dollars on mindfulness, meditation, and the wellness industry. Ironically, what the modern world considers a new discovery has been known in India for thousands of years.
Yoga is not merely about health; it is also the foundation of self-confidence, leadership, discipline, and positive thinking. It has emerged as one of India’s greatest instruments of soft power.
Remember, the world recognizes you not first by your body, but by your thoughts and personality. This ancient Indian heritage is as relevant to today’s youth as it was thousands of years ago. All that is needed is to understand and embrace it. That is the message of yoga, and that is the path towards a healthy and successful India.
The global celebration of yoga witnessed today on International Yoga Day is nothing short of extraordinary.
International Yoga Day
Every year on 21 June, when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, the entire world is energized by the spirit of yoga. This is International Yoga Day—a day that strengthens not only the body but also calms the mind.
This priceless gift of India, with a history spanning thousands of years, is today being embraced by the world with deep respect. In 2014, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed at the United Nations General Assembly that yoga be recognized through an international observance. Supported by 177 countries, the UN declared 21 June as International Yoga Day.
The meaningful results of this initiative are visible today. Many countries across the world have realized that yoga offers a powerful way to lead a stress-free life. Humanity has now embarked on a path that is directly linked to both individual and collective well-being.
Official Theme 2026
The official theme for International Yoga Day 2026 is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” This theme emphasizes that yoga is not merely a tool for fitness but also an effective means of maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being as people grow older.
In the face of changing lifestyles, age-related health concerns, and rising mental stress, this year’s theme seeks to inspire people to lead healthier, more active, and fulfilling lives.
