Nidhi Choudhary, a 2012 batch IAS officer of Maharashtra cadre, has always been drawn to the world of art. Her journey as a painter began at a tender age when she would spend hours immersed in colors, creating vivid paintings and drawings. She recalls starting her artistic journey when she was just 9 or 10 years old, inspired by her environment and driven by a love for creativity.
Her talent did not go unnoticed; many of her artworks were published in Hindi newspapers, a proof of her budding talent. These early recognitions provided a significant motivation for young Nidhi. However, as she advanced in her education, the rigorous demands of academia and later her professional responsibilities as an IAS officer pulled her away from painting.
In an exclusive interview with Indian Masterminds, the officer who is currently posted as Commissioner of Skill Development at the Government of Maharashtra, shared details about her artistic journey.
A REAWAKENING: RETURNING TO ART
Despite her demanding career, Nidhi’s passion for painting never faded. It was during her second pregnancy in 2018 that she found solace in her art once again. Balancing postpartum challenges and the pressures of her work, painting became a form of therapy for her, a creative outlet that helped manage stress and maintain her emotional well-being.
“Painting is not just a hobby for me; it’s my passion, and I would like to pursue it more seriously in the future,” she shared.
Her dedication to her craft led her to complete a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Bombay Arts Society through weekend classes. Although her hectic schedule prevented her from attending several classes, Nidhi’s journey as an artist has largely been self-taught. She continues to aspire to deepen her artistic knowledge through professional courses in the future.
EXPLORING THEMES: SPIRITUALITY AND NATURE
Nidhi’s art predominantly revolves around spiritual and natural themes. She primarily works with oil and acrylic mediums, producing over 500 paintings that capture the essence of these subjects. Her paintings are not only a reflection of her artistic vision but also serve as a medium through which she expresses her innermost thoughts and emotions.
Her artistic accomplishments have been showcased at various esteemed platforms, including the India Art Fair, the Haat of Art Exhibition, and the Bombay Art Society Annual Exhibition. Additionally, she has participated in group shows with fellow artists like Nikita, Paridhi, and Veeri at venues such as Ravindra Natya Mandir in Mumbai and Amdavad Ni Gufa in Ahmedabad.
Nidhi has also used her art to give back to society, associating her shows with charitable causes.
“Till date, I have associated my art shows with charity causes for the District Army Welfare fund. My future shows will be for supporting an NGO named Udaan Seva Sansthan Hiravati, which works to empower girls in Sports from Hiravati village in Rajasthan,” she shared with Indian Masterminds.
BEYOND PAINTINGS: A POET AT HEART
Much like her paintings, Nidhi Choudhary’s poetry is an extension of her creative self. She began writing poetry as a child, with her first poem published at the age of 10 in a magazine. Her literary works have since appeared in several magazines, showcasing her versatility as both a painter and a poet.
Nidhi has written over 200 poems, ranging from simple rhythmic verses for children to complex explorations of love, betrayal, and life. She believes that poets, much like painters, experience the world with heightened sensitivity, a trait she considers an asset in her administrative career.
“Being sensitive might appear as a weak trait, especially in a profession like mine, but I believe that sensitive people are better administrators and serve citizens with more sincerity,” Nidhi stated.
Among her numerous poems, “मैं लिखूँगी” holds a special place in her heart. This poem reflects her belief in the power of words and their ability to bring light to the darkest moments. Through her writing, she finds a voice that remains unwavering in the face of adversity.
THE INTERSECTION OF ART AND ADMINISTRATION
For Nidhi Choudhary, painting and poetry are not just hobbies but essential components of her life that provide balance and fulfillment. These creative pursuits serve as powerful stress relievers, allowing her to work more efficiently and with greater joy.
Nidhi emphasizes the importance of staying connected to one’s core passions, regardless of professional demands. “Whatever position we hold will not remain forever. We must, therefore, remain true to our core, which we realize when we keep our interests alive,” she said.
Her ability to maintain her childhood interests with enthusiasm and excitement has played a significant role in her professional success, fueling her energy to serve with a smile.
Despite her busy schedule, Nidhi finds time for her passions during weekends, early mornings, and holidays. Her children also share her love for painting, turning these creative moments into cherished family experiences. Nidhi believes that making time for oneself is crucial to thriving in today’s stressful, competitive world.
In the multifaceted life of IAS officer Nidhi Choudhary, art is not merely a pastime but a profound expression of her identity. Through her paintings and poetry, she continues to inspire others, demonstrating that creativity and governance can coexist harmoniously.
